Jay Cutler Trade Improves Chicago Bears Odds to Win the Super Bowl
Written April 3, 2009 by Steve Janus
When Super Bowl 43 ended with the Pittsburgh Steelers being crowned the NFL Champions, sportsbooks immediately released the odds to win Super Bowl 43 for every NFL team in 20010 (for the 2009 season). Included in that list where the Chicago Bears, who have been dominating the recent sports headlines with their trade for former Denver Bronco Quarterback, Jay Cutler. The QB came at a hefty price for the Bears, who gave up their starter, Kyle Orton, along with a first and third round pick in this year’s NFL draft, as well as a first round pick in next year’s draft (note: the Bears also got a 5th round pick for this year’s draft from the Broncos in this deal). I wanted to see how the acquisition of Cutler affected the Bears’ odds to win the Super Bowl this year and it appears that the deal, coupled with their recent signing of future Hall of Fame tackle Orlando Pace has drastically improved Chicago’s chances.
The initial odds for the Bears to win the Super Bowl at Sportsbook.com were released at 40/1. That number had fluctuated a bit during the off-season, but that number gives us an idea of what was expected of the Bears if they were to go into this season with the same team they finished with last year. This is by far the biggest roster move for the Bears this year (for any NFL, for that matter) and Vegas has responded by adjusting the odds considerably in the Bears’ favor. The same book that opened the season with Chicago at those 40 to 1 odds, recently adjusted them to 25/1. The move doesn’t make the Bears the #1 contender for the NFL championship this year, but they are obviously expected to be much better with Cutler running the offense. I think Chicago can improve on that number even more with their draft, particularly if they sign a high-impact wide receiver, though that may be more difficult with the loss of a first round pick this year. Bill Young, “Black Widow”, wrote an article on the 2009 Chicago Bears Mock Draft before this story broke, explaining the Bears’ need for a threat down the field.
The reaction to the Bears’ signing Cutler has been mixed, I read a comment from one fan that argued that Cutler was the reason for the Broncos late-season collapse last year and that he would never be successful in Chicago. So much for optimism. On the whole, however, the majority reaction from Chicago fans has been decidedly enthusiastic about getting what they feel is their first real franchise Quarterback in decades. Fans feel like he instantly gives them a better shot at a championship and Vegas evidently agrees.
If you were wondering how the trade affected the Broncos’ odds to win the Super Bowl, it apparently didn’t make them any better or worse at all. They were listed at 30 to 1 odds at the end of Super Bowl 43, and they are listed at 30/1 odds today.
