Jets Ravens Spread

New York head coach Rex Ryan will get another shot at his former team Sunday night when the Jets travel to face the Baltimore Ravens. It didn’t go so well in Ryan’s first shot at his old squad last season as the Ravens went into New York and came away with a hard-fought 10-9 victory. Ryan was unhappy when he did not get hired as the head coach in Baltimore, but he’s certainly found plenty of success with his new team after taking the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship games. This is sure to be one of the best Sunday night games of the year, and it will be nationally televised on NBC at 8:20 EST
Looking at the spreads for Week 4, I find a line of Baltimore -3.5 over New York with a total set of 42.5 points.
Baltimore
No team opened their season with a more convincing victory than the Ravens. Baltimore (2-1) beat archrival Pittsburgh 35-7 while forcing seven turnovers, completely smacking the Steelers in the mouth. They likely suffered an emotional letdown the following week, looking horrible in a 26-13 loss at Tennessee. The Ravens would get back on track last week, making easy work of the St. Louis Rams 37-7.
Baltimore racked up a team record 553 total yards against the Rams, including 406 in the first half. Joe Flacco went 27-of-48 for a career-high 389 yards with three touchdown passes, all of which went to Torrey Smith. In fact, the rookie receiver became the first play in NFL history to have his first three career catches all go for touchdowns. Smith finished with five receptions for 152 yards and those three scores.
Ray Rice has been doing it all for the Ravens. He has rushed for 231 yards and a touchdown, while also catching 14 balls for 178 yards and two scores. Anquan Boldin leads all receivers with 14 catches for 194 yards and a touchdown. Ed Dickson has emerged on the scene as a reliable tight end, catching 12 passes for 135 yards and a score. Baltimore ranks in the middle of the pack in both important offensive and defensive categories. They are 11th in the league in total offense (389.0 yards/game) and 13th in total defense (329.3 yards/game).
New York
The Jets were fortunate to escape with a 27-24 home win over the Dallas Cowboys in their opener, erasing a 14-point fourth quarter deficit thanks to key mistakes from Tony Romo. They would need no luck the following week, dominating the Jacksonville Jaguars 32-3 on their home turf. New York (2-1) certainly looked vulnerable last Sunday, losing 34-24 at Oakland. They allowed the Raiders to rush for 234 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, which sparked up many questions about their toughness.
Because of that terrible performance against Oakland, the Jets rank 31st in the league against the run (136.7 yards/game) and they’ve allowed a league-high five touchdowns on the ground. “Quite honestly there’s only one other time I can remember a game like that happening to me, and I’ve coached, what, 15 years in the NFL? So it doesn’t sit too well with me or anybody in this organization and the good news is we get to play Sunday,” Ryan said. “The bad news is that we have to play against a team that is rolling right now. You have Baltimore and then New England right after that.”
Quarterback Mark Sanchez suffered a broken nose against the Raiders, but he is expected to go this week. Sanchez is completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 886 yards and six touchdowns to four interceptions this season. The Jets may be without center Nick Mangold for a second straight week, whose sprained ankle still hasn’t recovered. New York is 16th in total offense (360.7 yards/game) and 11th in total defense (325.4 yards/game). They are 25th in the league in rushing (82.0 yards/game), and must find a way to get their ground game going this week to take some heat off of Sanchez.
Betting Trends
The Jets enter this game on a 13-6 ATS run in their last 19 games as an underdog. They are also 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a loss against the spread.
Baltimore is an outstanding 46-22-1 ATS in their last 69 games as a home favorite. They have not responded well after a blowout victory, however, going 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a SU win of more than 14 points.
Got something to say?
