NFL Betting Lines: New York Jets at New Orleans Saints

It will be the nasty defense of the Jets colliding with the high powered offense of the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon. Both teams have started the 2009 season with perfect 3-0 records and will look to make a statement against each other. Drew Brees failed to throw a touchdown pass in the Saints 27-7 win at Buffalo, but RB Pierre Thomas did most of the damage with his two fourth quarter touchdown runs and 126 yards rushing on just 14 carries. Jet rookie QB Mark Sanchez has shown improvement in each game and accounted for three touchdowns in New York’s 24-17 win at home over Tennessee. The Louisiana Superdome should be loud and raucous when the Jets come to town as the current NFL odds show the Saints are a 7 point favorite.

When Jets personnel made the move on draft day to trade up to the fifth pick and grab USC QB Mark Sanchez, even they could not have predicted a 3-0 start behind the rookie. Sanchez has played like a seasoned veteran behind center, throwing for over 600 yards and four touchdowns in his first three games while only throwing two interceptions. The defense has taken on Rex Ryan’s mentality from Baltimore and is ranked near the top in almost every defensive category. Bringing over LB Bart Scott and FS Jim Leonard has been a huge addition as they were familiar with Ryan’s scheme and know where they have to be in that blitz packages that are run an astonishing 62% of the time. WR Jerricho Cotchery has stepped up to be the big play threat in the Jets passing game, catching 18 balls for 285 yards and a touchdown. The running attack has been spear headed by Thomas Jones and Leon Washington.

New Orleans can put points on the board as quickly as anyone in the NFL and the numbers back up that point. The Saints are first in the league in points scored per game and yardage racking up a mind numbing 438 yards per contest. They are second in rushing with over 170 yards and sixth in passing. Not only can they put 7 on you in a hurry, but their defense is top 10 in total yards and rushing yards allowed. QB Drew Brees was on record setting pace for touchdown passes in a season after tossing nine in his first two games. The Bills secondary shutout Brees, but it didn’t stop the Saints offense from putting up 27 points. A combination of Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell provide a nice 1-2-3 punch in the running game. What really makes this team scary is that their defense is only allowing 67 yards rushing per game and is finally providing support for their potent offensive attack.

I believe that the Jets come at your from so many different angles on defense that it is impossible to fully prepare for their schemes. The line seems high for two quality teams even though New Orleans is 3-0 ATS this season. I would recommend taking a touchdown with the stronger D and an offense that can control the ball with long drives. Play: New York Jets +7
