Who Will Be the Jets Starting Quaterback in 2009?
Written August 6, 2009 by Jack Jones
When the Jets drafted former USC quarterback, Mark Sanchez, I think a lot of fans assumed he would become their starter. Since the Jets have started training camp, however, it’s clear that he will have to fight for the starting job with Kellen Clemens.
Jets fans got good news when they learned that Jets head coach, Rex Ryan would name his starter before the Jets play the Giants in their pre-season opener on August 29th, but it looks like they will have to wait until then before anything is decided.

This could be a genuine quarterback controversy, or it could be a strategy by Ryan to motivate his two quarterbacks into working hard throughout the training camp. According to AFC Beast, neither QB has pulled away as the clear-cut starter. Reports are that Clemens has taken the bulk of reps with the starting offense, but considering they are just 6 days into their camp, a lot could change from now until the 29th.
There is a long-standing debate over how rookie quarterbacks should be handled in their first season or first few seasons. One camp insists that rookies need to be groomed by learning the offense from the sidelines and following the lead of their veteran counterparts. The other camp wants to throw rookies into the fire so they can learn as soon as possible how to manage an NFL game. This group can pull examples from last season, where both the Falcons, with Matt Ryan, and the Ravens, with Joe Flacco had tremendous success with their rookie QBs. Opponents of this position would be quick to point out that those examples are the exception, not the rule for rookie quarterback performances throughout the years. Needless to say, it will be an interesting camp for the Jets. Will it be the beginning of the Sanchez Era in New York, or will their top pick have to wait to try to make his mark on the franchise?
