Jets vs. Chargers Predictions

Written September 17, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Monday Sept. 22, Brett Favre and the New York Jets head to San Diego to take on the Chargers in what should be a classic showdown. Last week the Chargers suffered another heart breaker to push their record to 0-2, and 2 games behind what looks like to be a very good Broncos team. The Jets on the other hand were not able to beat the Brady less Patriots, as they dropped to 1-1. If the Charges first two games are any indication of how this one is going, whoever has the ball last will be your winner.

The Jets come in as pretty big underdogs after they were unable to take care of business last week, and Brett Favre wasn’t quite up to the same level as he was in week 1, as he threw for 181 yards, 1 score, and his first INT as a Jet. Chansi Stuckey was again the recipient of a Favre pass for a touchdown, but Laveranues Coles grabbed the most yards with 77. Thomas Jones ran the ball effectively for 70 yards, but there is a lot of chirping that the Jets are being a little to conservative when they get down in the redzone, as they chose to run the ball 3 times instead of letting Favre use his arm as a weapon. If the Jets want to beat the Chargers they have to let Favre do what he does best, throw the football.

The Jets defense did its part holding the Patriots to just 19 points, as they still have plenty of weapons to beat you with. The Jets were unable to force Matt Cassel to make any mistakes, but they did hold him to just 165 yards. The Jets run defense was solid holding the Pats to just 3.2 yards per carry on 33 attempts. This week the Chargers offense will likely get LT back in the mix and if they don’t stop him, then him and Rivers will light up this Jets D. Bet Jets +9 at JustBet.com

Speaking of LT, they are hoping that by skipping out on practice this week he can be almost a 100% for the game this weekend, and that really helps this Chargers offense, even though backup Darren Sproles had 125 total yards and touchdown last week. Quarterback Phillip Rivers looked about as strong as he has, throwing for 377 yards and 3 scores, and his lone interception came on a questionable call. The Chargers leading receiver were Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson, and its starting to look like Rivers is getting a real good feel for these guys on the field, Chambers led the way with 83 yards and two scores.

There really isn’t any other way to put it besides the Chargers defense got lit up by a pretty good Broncos offense. They allowed Jay Cutler to throw for over 350 yards, and were simply unable to stop Brandon Marshall, who had 18 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown. They weren’t much better against the run, as thy allowed a combo of Denver running backs to run for 145 yards and 6 yard average. If the defense doesn’t get better, it could be a long weekend against Favre and the Jets on Monday Night Football. Bet Chargers -9 at JustBet.com

Predicted Score:
Jets 18
Chargers 27
