2009 John Deere Classic Predictions
Written by Jason Lowry
Tiger Woods made sure that he held the trophy at his own event, as he was able to hold off Hunter Mahan for a one shot lead at the AT&T National event last weekend. This week Woods will not be in action when the PGA Tour heads to Silvis, Illinois for the 2009 John Deere Classic at TPC At Deere Run. Last year Kenny Perry added to his win total with a playoff win here over Brad Adamonis and Jay Williamson. Perry along with many other top golfers on Tour are set to take aim at this relatively easy course this Thursday, and there is no secret that if you want to win this tournament you have to make your fair share of birdies, as the last 11 winners have posted a score at 16 under or better. For those of you looking to do some PGA Tour betting this weekend, I have listed the three golfers I feel have the best shot at coming away with a win.
Kenny Perry +1000 to win: Perry will look to close the gap in the FedEX Cup Points standings this weekend, when he looks to defend his title here at Deere Run. Perry currently sits in 2nd place just above Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson and right below Tiger Woods. Not only will Perry be looking to make it back to back wins at the John Deere Classic, but he will be looking for his 2nd straight win in consecutive starts, as Perry took home the trophy at the Travelers Championship just a couple weeks ago. Perry also won earlier this season at the FBR Open, and had an amazing run at the Masters where he finished tied for 2nd. I think there is good reason that Perry is the oddsmakers overall favorite to win this weekend, and I will be shocked if this guy is not in the thick of things come the final round on Sunday.
Lucas Glover +2000 to win: I expected to see a drop off in Glover’s game after his incredible win at the US Open, but all Glover has done since winning is first major is tie for 11th at the Travelers Championship and tie for 5th last week at the AT&T National. Glover is No.1 in total driving, 19th putting, and 5th in birdies per round. Glover has also played well at this event before, as he tied for 11th here in 2007. Glover is playing as good as golf as anybody on tour right now, and I think there is a very good chance that he comes away with another win this weekend.
David Duval +5000 to win: I am going out on a little bit of a limb here with my third and final pick for this weekend, as Duval hasn’t won since he won the British Open back in 2001. I was very impressed with the way he handle himself at the US Open, and his ability to bounce back from a horrific start on the final day of play. Duval has only placed in 5 of his 13 starts this season, but I have a feeling that just maybe the US Open will get this guy back on track. I think the key will be getting off to a good start on Thursday, as there will be so many people keeping an eye on his play to see if he has really bounced back. If you like taking a little bit of a chance on a bit of a long shot, than I don’t see why you don’t give Duval a shot this weekend.
