John Elway & Joe Montana on Brett Favre
Written July 27, 2009 by Jack Jones
A pair of Hall of Fame quarterbacks offered their advice to Brett Favre on whether he should return to the NFL this season. According to an article in the LA Times, both John Elway and Joe Montana weighed in on Favre’s pending career choice. Elway said, “If he decides not to play now and doesn’t come back, I think he’ll question that for the rest of his life”. Montana offered this opinion: “If he’s ready to play, then yeah, he should, but usually when you’re waffling like that it makes it difficult on everybody. . . . If it was the first time he’s done it, it would be different. But we’ve seen it already, and here we go again. I’m sure that’s all [the Minnesota Vikings] are thinking about.”
Elway’s position seems to be one of support and encouragement, after all, we all remember Elway coming back after the 1997 season, after surgery on his biceps to lead the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl victories. Prior to those seasons many were calling for Elway’s retirement.
Montana is taking more of a pragmatic approach, understanding that if Favre’s head isn’t totally committed to coming back to the NFL, he’s not of much use to a team or to his own legacy. He added, “If you’re not into it mentally, it’s really tough to get there. You can’t just walk in and, because you’ve played so many years, just do it. Especially at that position. You’ve got to be more mentally ready to play than anybody.”
If you are going to bet the NFL this season, then I strongly recommend taking advantage of the $500 match bonus going on at BetUS. As a special thanks to our readers, anyone who signs up and deposits at least $500 will get an additional $500 for free.
I tend to side with Joe Montana in this case. I honestly don’t really care about what Brett Favre does anymore, I just want him to make a decision and stick with it. We had Brett Favre overload before last year’s season and I think the majority of people are pretty tired of the run-around.
The Minnesota Vikings are the team that Favre would most likely play for this season, but no decisions have been made yet. The NFL odds for the upcoming season show the Vikings at +1200 odds to win the Super Bowl in 2010, and you would have to imagine that those odds would only improve if Favre joined their roster, seeing as how they have a pretty significant hole at the quarterback slot. How much effect he will have is unclear, but I could see the Vikings move in line with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are now listed at +1000 odds to repeat as Super Bowl Champions.
