2011 Kansas City Chiefs Schedule
Written by Steve Janus
The Kansas City Chiefs surprised a lot of people by winning the AFC West with a 10-6 record in 2010. While their season was put to an end by the Baltimore Ravens in the very first round, this is a team that is definitely headed in the right direction. Now Kansas City must prove that last year wasn’t a fluke by continuing to get better and competing for a playoff spot again in 2011.
To get a better idea of what to expect from the Chiefs during the 2011-12 NFL season, let’s take a look at their schedule for the upcoming season. Kansas City had a very favorable schedule last year after finishing last in the AFC West in 2009, and took advantage of it by going 8-2 outside of their division. This year they have a much harder schedule ahead of them. On top of their six division games against the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, and Denver Broncos, Kansas City will take on the AFC East, NFC North, Indianapolis Colts, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Chiefs were a bit fortunate to win the West last year, as they went just 2-4 against their division rivals. For Kansas City to repeat their success from last season they have to do a better job in their six division games. Anything less than a 3-3 record would be a disappointment.
We will find out a lot about this team in their four games against the AFC East. TheĀ Chiefs get the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins at home, while having to go on the road to face the New England Patriots and New York Jets. Kansas City should be favored against both the Bills and Dolphins, but it would be a bit of surprise if they won either road game against two of the top teams in the AFC.
The Chiefs also figure to have their hands full in their four games against the NFC North. They will be tested in both road games against the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears, but both are winnable games. They should be able to handle the Minnesota Vikings at home, but their home matchup against the Green Bay Packers will be another big test for this young team, and likely a game they will come in as a rare underdog at Arrowhead Stadium.
By winning the AFC West the Chiefs must face the other two division winners outside of the East, and both of these games figure to be quite the challenge for Kansas City. The Chiefs will have to go on the road to take on the Colts for a second straight season, and will again likely be home dogs in their showdown with the Steelers. Winning either of these games would be huge for their attempt to make it back to the playoffs.
