Kansas State at Texas Tech Point Spread

Written October 8, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

Kansas State beat up on Tennessee Tech earlier this season, but now it is time to play the big boys, Texas Tech. The Wildcats will head to Lubbock to take on Mike Leach and his high scoring Texas Tech football team this Saturday night. Both teams come into the game with a 3-2 record, but Texas Tech has played a much tougher schedule and has losses against two quality opponents.  If you do any football betting and you haven’t taken advantage of the $500 match bonus at Betus, you need to as soon as possible.  This offer won’t last forever!

Kansas State is in a unique situation this year, with legendary coach Bill Snyder coming back to take the head coaching job that vacated a few years ago. Snyder is definitely a great coach and the Wildcats should improve in time, but thus far the Wildcats haven’t been up to par. Earlier this season Kansas State lost to Louisiana Lafayette and narrowly escaped against UMass at home. The Wildcats did come back to win their Big 12 opener last weekend at Iowa State on a blocked field goal that sealed the deal. Carson Coffman started the season as quarterback, but Grant Gregory took over last weekend and played quite well. Coffman had been having trouble with turnovers, so the Wildcats will probably stick with Gregory at least for the time being. Gregory brings a running threat in addition to a strong arm and veteran leadership. The Wildcats haven’t excelled at running the ball or throwing it, but have improved in both categories from the start of the season.

Texas Tech lost a whole lot of talent from last year’s amazing team, but they still have quite a bit of offensive firepower. Taylor Potts is a pretty impressive junior quarterback, but his status for this game is unclear because of a concussion suffered last weekend. Steven Sheffield is definitely a serviceable backup if he is needed. Barron Batch provides Tech with a better running game than they have been accustomed to, which helps in keeping defenses off guard. The defense has also improved for the Red Raiders, as shown by their slowing down of Houston’s offense and even Texas’ offense for much of the game. The Red Raiders aren’t what they were last year, but they certainly aren’t an easy opponent.

The Red Raiders are favored by 16.5 at home in this conference matchup. The NCAA football odds makers have set the over/under at 57. The total would probably be higher if Taylor Potts were certainly starting, but given the unknown this seems like a very fair number.

Will Kansas State be able to keep up with Texas Tech? It seems unlikely since the Kansas State offense is certainly not one of the best around and their defense has yet to be tested by an offense that is top notch. The Red Raiders should be able to take control of this game and finish off the Wildcats, but wagering on the spread could be a tough call because of the injuries and the unknown status of Taylor Potts. Look for the Red Raiders to be able to move the ball both through the air and on the ground, while Kansas State will probably have difficulty scoring a whole lot of points on an improved Tech defense.
