Kansas State at Washington State

The Washington State Cougars will seek revenge on the Kansas State Wildcats tonight when the two teams square off in the Big 12/ Pac-10 Hardwood Series. Kansas State comes in ranked no. 5 in the country with a 6-1 record, but head coach Frank Martin hasn’t exactly been pleased with the way his team has played so far this season. Washington State comes in with a perfect 5-0 record, but haven’t exactly played anyone, and are hoping that a win over a team like Kansas State will get them the respect they feel they deserve.
Looking at our current odds, the oddsmakers currently have the Wildcats favored by 2-points over the Cougars on the road.
Why Kansas State will Cover: Even though Martin isn’t giving his team a whole lot of praise for their efforts this season, the Wildcats have looked very impressive outside of their 68-82 loss to No. 1 Duke, as they have wins over Virginia Tech and Gonzaga.
The Wildcats were an impressive 15-6 on the road last season, and many times looked better on the road than they did at home. This however is a very long road trip for a young team, and it will be interesting to see how they respond. Seniors Jacob Pullen and Curtis Kelly have to come out and play well, and get this team going. Pullen comes in leading the team averaging 16 points and just over four assists a game this season, while Kelly averages just over 10 points a game.
Why Washington State will Cover: The Cougars haven’t forgot what the Wildcats did to them last season, and you can expect them to come out and do everything they can to keep the same thing from happening on their home floor. Washington State knows that a win over a team like Kansas State looks very good on your resume when you are trying to get into the NCAA Tournament, and you can expect this team to fight all the way to the end.
The Cougars have been led by Klay Thompson and Faisal Aden, as both players come in averaging over 20 points a game. Thompson went off for 22 points against the Wildcats last year, but also turned the ball over nine times. The Cougars as a team have to take better control of the basketball in this game, as they can’t afford to give the Wildcats any easy baskets.
The Cougars come in shooting 38% from the 3-point line this season, and it will be important for Washington State to get off to a fast start. Last year the Wildcats jumped out to a 19-4 lead and simply cruised to a win. By starting fast the Cougars will keep what is expected to be a sell-out crowd into the game, and make things even harder for the Wildcats in their first true road test of the season.
My Prediction: I think the Cougars are a very talented team, but they could be without 6-8 junior forward DeAngelo Casto, and while they might get sophomore guard Reggie Moore back tonight, he isn’t expected to be much of a factor, as he still isn’t fully recovered from a wrist injury. Kansas State is just too talented, and Martin knows how to get his team ready to play on the road. I think you give the 2-points and take the Wildcats tonight.
Got something to say?
