Kent State at Florida

This Thursday the No. 24 Florida Gators (6-2) will host the Kent State Golden Flashes (5-2), in the first ever meeting between these two schools. The Gators bounced back from a disappointing loss at UCF last week, with a 67-48 win over American on Sunday. Florida really hasn’t been tested all that much this season, their only game against a ranked team was Ohio State, and they lost 93-75. The Golden Flashes may be 5-2, but they haven’t exactly played the toughest competition. The Golden Flashes just lost at UAB 75-59, arguably their toughest opponent yet.

Kent State did have a five game winning streak going before their recent loss to UAB, but this team is going to have to play extremely well to keep this one from being a blowout. The Golden Flashes are already 0-2 on the road, and playing at Florida is no easy task.

Junior Justin Green will have to have a big time game for the Golden Flashes. On the season Green is averaging a team best 18.6 points to go along with 7.1 rebounds a game. Junior guard Carlton Guyton has to be on from three-point range for Kent State to have a chance. Guyton has went 7-12 from the three point line in the last two games, and is hitting 43.2% on the season.

Rodriguez Sherman is the only senior on the team this year, and he is going to have to keep his team under control and not allow the Golden Flashes to get rattled if the Gators get off to a strong start. Sherman is third on the team, averaging 10.9 points a game.

Florida brings a well balanced scoring attack to the table, as six players average between 7 to 13 points a game. Erving Walker leads the Gators with a 13.3 average, but anyone of a number of players can lead the Gators in scoring on a given night.

Florida comes in averaging a modest 71 points a game this season, and outside of the game against Ohio State, they have played respectable on the defensive side of the ball. Florida has struggled with rebounding this season, and they have to be able to win the battle on the boards against the Golden Flashes. If Florida allows Kent State to get a bunch of second chance points, they could be in for a big upset.

I still think that if Florida comes to play, there is no way they lose this game at home. The odds have not be released for this game, but be sure to check back and see how much of a chance the oddsmakers are giving Kent State in this one.
