2012 Kentucky Derby Picks
Written by Steve Janus - Google +
The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby is set for this Saturday at Churchill Downs. The historic race that brings in fans from all over is guaranteed to be an entertaining race, as there really isn’t a clear-cut favorite. To help you make your Kentucky Derby picks, here is a look at the eight horses I feel have a legit shot at winning.
Bodemeister (+400)
Not only is Bodemeister the odds on favorite to win the race, but he is my top choice to finish ahead of the field on Saturday. There is some concern with Bodemeister starting off too strong and trying to keep up with the fast horses out of the gate, but if you watched him run at the Arkansas Derby you know this horse if for real.
Union Rags (+450)
Some feel that Union Rags is the horse to beat, despite all the attention being given to Bodemeister. I don’t think there is any denying that Union Rags is capable of winning the race, but I have a hard time betting a horse that has yet to deliver. A lot of people are counting on this horse to run his best race at the Kentucky Derby. If he does, there’s a pretty good chance he will secure the victory.
Gemologist (+600)
Here is a horse that seems to be getting overlooked. Gemologist has won all five races he has entered, including an impressive win at the Wood Memorial. He is also a perfect 2 for 2 in races he has run at Churchill Downs. His trainer Todd Pletcher is one of the best, if not the best, in the business.
Dullahan (+800)
First things first, Dullahan will have three-time Kentucky Derby winning jockey Kent Desormeaux mounted on his back. That alone makes this horse a big time contender. Desormeaux will get the very best out of Dullahan, who is widely known for his ability to close out a race. It’s also worth considering that this horse drew the No. 5 pole position, which is a perfect fit the kind of race Dullahan likes to run.
Hansen (+1000)
If you are looking for a horse with some big time speed who has enough to hold on for a win, Hansen needs to be on the top of your list. This horse has a tremendous amount of natural speed, which he put on display in his win at the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile. There is some concern that he will waste some valuable energy early in the race. His No. 15 post position seems to be like a great fit, as he should be able to put himself in the best possible position to win the race.
I’ll Have Another (+1200)
I’ll Have Another has really made some nice improvements as a three-year-old. He won the Robert B. Lewis and the Santa Anita Derby in his two starts this season. Jockey, Mario Gutierrez, is a bit of a unknown. Gutierrez is known as “Marvelous Mario” for his impressive run as a jockey on the Canadian circuit. This will be Gutierrez’s first ride at the Kentucky Derby, but 41 jockeys before him have won this race in their first start.
Take Charge Indy (+1500)
At this price you simply can’t ignore Take Charge Indy. This horse will get a lot of action simply because his jockey is the great Calvin Borel, who won the Kentucky Derby three times from 2007-2010. That isn’t the only reason you should be considering this horse. Take Charge Indy has shown the ability to take the lead early and never get it back and also make a late charge from the middle of the pack.
Daddy Nose Best (+1500)
If you have been paying close attention to these horses and how they have been working out on the main track, you know that Daddy Nose Best is a horse you have to keep an eye on at the Kentucky Derby. While Daddy Nose Best has won the G3-El Camino Real Derby and G3-Sunland Derby, neither one of those races featured a field as talented as what he will see at Churchill Downs.
Got something to say?
