2009 Kentucky Derby Results
Written by Jack Jones
The 135th running of the Kentucky Derby took place back on May 2nd, 2009 at 6:30 PM EST. The fastest two minutes in sports lived up to an exciting billing as Mine That Bird became the second biggest underdog of all time to win the event. The purse was $2,117,200 with the winner getting $1,417,200. With the track being sloppy and the weather cloudy it wasn’t the best day of weather you could have hoped for, but it was exciting nonetheless.
Results – #8 horse Mine that Bird ridden by Borel. It paid $103.20 to win, $54 to place, and $25.80 to show. Pioneer of the Nile, the #16 horse ridden by Gomez finished in second, paying $8.40 to place and $6.40 to show. In third was the #2 horse, Musket Man, ridden by Coa. He paid $12 to show. The rest of the order of finish went as follows: (7) Papa Clem, (11) Chocolate Candy, (17) Summer Bird, (9) Join in the Dance, (10) Regal Ransom, (1) West Side Bernie, (12) General Quarters, (15) Dunkirk, (5) Hold Me Back, (4) Advice, (19) Desert Party, (3) Mr. Hot Stuff, (14) Atomic Rain, (18) Nowehter to Hide, (6) Friesan Fire, and then (20) Flying Private. The early favorite (13) I Want Revenge scratched.
Exotics – A $2 exact paid $2,074.80 with a $1 trifecta bringing bettors a whopping $20,750.30. If you had the superfect you were paid $278,503.20. Pioneer of the Nile was the only favorite to hit the board (getting second after a photo finish), so that’s why the payouts were so high. If you had any exotic winning ticket then you cashed in on a big payday.
Notes – The race was ran in 2:02.66 with Mine that Bird coming from last place at the 3/4 mile mark to win going away. Calvin Borel rode Street Sense to the winner’s circle back in 2007, giving him two Derby wins in three years.
