2010 Kobalt Tools 500 Predictions

It was the same old story last week on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as Jimmie Johnson and the No.48 car took home another victory, this time at the Shelby American. It was the second win in a row for Johnson on the 2010 season, and I think it’s pretty safe to say that he is the most dominating driver in the sport.
Johnson, who is normally not a fast starter, will try and make it three in a row when drivers head to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the 2010 Kobalt Tools 500. Standing in the way of Johnson will be defending champion Kurt Busch, and 2008 winner Kyle Busch. Those aren’t the only two guys that will be trying to take down Johnson this week, as the rest of the field wants to see nothing more than the No.48 car out of victory lane. So with that here is a look at my three favorites to come away with a win this Sunday at Atlanta.
Jeff Gordon: For much of the race last week it was the No.24 car of Gordon leading the way, as Gordon lead 219 of the 267 laps last weekend before finally finishing in third. Gordon hasn’t won at Atlanta since 2003, and hasn’t won this race since 1999, but this is a guy that is consistently right there in the top 5 with a chance to win. For instance Gordon finished second at this event last season, and a solid fifth back in 2008. I know it will be hard for Gordon to take down his teammate Johnson, but I have a sneaky feeling that it will be Gordon’s turn to take home the checkered flag this weekend.
Kevin Harvick: With all the attention surrounding Johnson and his two wins the past two weeks, few realize that Harvick is the points leader heading into the race this weekend. Harvick has finished second to Johnson in each of the past two races, and had a solid seventh place finish to start the season at the Daytona 500. On top of that Harvick has really raced well at Atlanta the past couple years at this event, finishing 4th in 2009 and 7th in 2008. It won’t be long before Harvick puts a win on the board for the 2010 season, and I feel there is a great chance it will come this Sunday.
Kyle Busch: It really looked like Busch was going to be a force in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series after his amazing season in 2008, where he won eight times and was the points leader for most of the season. Since that season Busch has only won 4 times on the Sprint Cup Series, and has really struggled to start the season with three consecutive finishes outside of the top 10. For many fans, they can’t imagine a better scenario with Busch struggling, but this is still a very good race car driver, and I feel like he is going to finally get going with a great showing this weekend.
Got something to say?
