Kobe Bryant 2008-09 NBA MVP Predictions
Written January 25, 2009 by Jason Lowry
We are half way through the 2008-09 NBA season, and there are a handful of players making a push for the regular season MVP. There are still a bunch of games left to go, so no one player has it locked up just yet. In the 2007-08 season it was Kobe Bryant who finally won this award, after really transforming his game and making the Lakers one of the elite teams in the NBA once again. As of now the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers are tied for the best record at 34-8. Bryant and the Lakers have a 10.5 game lead in the Pacific Division, and are currently 5 games better than the Spurs for the best record in the Western Conference. Here is a look at just what Kobe has done this season numbers wise, and what chances we think this guy has at winning back to back NBA MVP awards. Kobe Bryant +500 odds to win MVP at Sportsbook.com Bryant has been a force in the NBA for years now, as he is an 11 time NBA All-Star, a 3-time NBA Champion, and an All-NBA First Team performer 6 times in his 13 year career. While those numbers mean nothing when it comes to winning the MVP award this season, there is no question that this guy is one of the best we have ever seen, and as long as he is playing he is going to be in the MVP talks. This season Bryant is averaging just 26.4 points per game, his third lowest average since the 2000 season. Still Bryant is third in the NBA in scoring just 2.4 points behind Dwayne Wades 28.8 average. The thing is, its not all about scoring for Bryant anymore, as he has really become more of a team player over the last couple seasons, and with the addition of Paul Gasol and the emergence of Andrew Bynum, Bryant finally has the talent around him to where he doesn’t have to shoot it 30 times a game for this team to win. Bryant is above his career averages in both assists (5.2) and total rebounds (5.6), but the stat to keep your eye on, is Bryant currently has his best shooting percentage of his carreer at just over 47%. While Kobe’s numbers aren’t as good as his MVP campaign last season, this guy has become the ultimate team player and there isn’t anyone better in clutch situations than this guy. How the rest of the season plays out for the Lakers and Bryant will really have a huge impact on whether or not this guy can repeat as MVP, as guys like Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Dwight Howard are all having monster seasons. I firmly believe that Bryant will remain at the top of the MVP candidates for the remainder of the season, and while his numbers might not be good enough to win the award when it is all said and done, the Lakers would be mediocre at best without this guy, and if the Lakers continue to hold the top record in the NBA, it’s going to be hard to argue against Bryant.
