LA Dodgers at Chicago Cubs Odds
Written May 28, 2009 by Jack Jones
It’s a rematch of the 2008 National League Division series when the L.A. Dodgers and Chicago Cubs meet up for the first time this season. Last season the Cubs won five of six in the regular season against L.A., including 3-0 at Wrigley, before then getting swept in the playoffs. “It’s interesting,” manager Joe Torre said. “We go back to Wrigley where we lost three straight there during the regular season but had success the first two games there during the playoffs.” The odds makers are giving the advantage to the Cubs in this one as WagerWeb lists Chicago as the -133 favorite.
Los Angeles enters off a three-game sweep in Colorado. Despite the absence of Manny Ramirez, they lead the NL in runs and batting average. James Loney has a 10-game hitting streak, batting 15-for-42 (.357) during the stretch. And second baseman Orlando Hudson has a 17-game hitting and is hitting .370 (27-for-73) during his streak. But no one is hotter than Juan Pierre, Ramirez’s replacement. He is 35 for 83 (.422) with 17 RBIs since Ramirez’s suspension, and 10 for 20 with seven RBIs in his last four games. Lefty Randy Wolf starts tonight for L.A., and he has a career 3-7 record with a 4.71 ERA in 15 career starts against the Cubs. At Wrigley he’s a little better, going 2-4 with a 4.38 ERA. Charged with slowing all those Dodgers is Cubs right-hander Randy Wells, who makes just his fourth big-league start. After not allowing a run in 11 innings over his first two outings, he gave up three runs in seven innings of a 3-1 loss at San Diego on Saturday.
The Cubs enter having won two games in a row following an eight-game losing streak. But they need to get outfielder Alfonso Soriano going. He had a great start in April but now admits he is bothered by a knee injury. Soriano is hitting .176 with runners in scoring position this season.
