Lakers Extending Pau Gasol’s Contract?
Written December 18, 2009 by Jack Jones
Eric Pincus of HoopsWorld is reporting that the Los Angeles Lakers and Pau Gasol are close to a contract extension. Gasol’s deal isn’t set to expire until the end of next season, but the two sides are currently look to hammer out a three year deal for the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Right now Gasol hauls in a measly $16.5 million this year and will bring home $17.8 million next season. The first year of his new deal should be worth between $18.7-$19.7 million.
The importance of Gasol shouldn’t even be a question. Look how he turned this good team into a great one when he came over in the Memphis deal a few years ago. This season alone the Lakers are 12-1 when he is on the floor and 8-3 when he was out nursing a sore hamstring.
If Gasol is signed, the Lakers will have Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, Luke Walton, and Ron Artest all under contract through the 2011-12 season eating up $56 million of payroll. Don’t forget that Kobe can opt of his deal this summer and the rumor is he is going to wait until then to negotiate a long-term deal with the team.
The Lakers are off tonight, but there are plenty of other NBA spreads out there to look at!
