How Good are the Los Angeles Lakers

Written December 28, 2009 by Jason Lowry

The Los Angeles Lakers have a lot to think about after their embarrassing defeat at home on Christmas Day against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and ESPN”s Dave McMenamin thinks the Lakers might not be as good as everyone thinks. Losses like the one the Lakers suffered happen, as teams will have an off night shooting, but there might be a little more to it than just a bad night out.

The Lakers bench has not lived up to its potential this far into the season, and a big reason for that is the play of Lamar Odom. After scoring in double figures in each of the Lakers first 5 games of the season, Odom has just six double digit outings in his last 24 games. On top of that the Lakers are getting little from Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown, and really miss the play of the injured Luke Walton.

Another problem is the drop in play from center Andrew Bynum, who started off the season on a monster pace, but ever since the return of Pau Gasol his numbers have dropped dramatically. Bynum was averaging 20 and 11 without Gasol, and a measly 13 and 6 with him in the starting lineup.

The Lakers were able to bounce back with a win at Sacramento on Saturday night, but it wasn’t easy as the Lakers need double over time to get the job done. Ron Artest had to miss the game because of a freak accident at his home in LA. Brown did give the Lakers bench some life with 15 points and 7 rebounds, but he has to show more consistency.

Don’t get me wrong the Lakers are a great team, and likely still the favorites to get out of the West, but it has become clear that they have some flaws.
