2009 Las Vegas Bowl: BYU vs Oregon State Betting Odds

Written December 22, 2009 by Hector Garza

Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall has his team playing in their fifth consecutive Las Vegas Bowl, and he’s perhaps the most excited this time around as they’ll be lining up against his alma mater, Oregon State.  #15 Brigham Young University will take on the #16 Beavers in Sam Boyd Stadium this Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. ET.  Its’ the first time both teams have been ranked in the bowl’s 18 year history.  The Cougars will be hoping for a better performance than last year, when they lost to Arizona 31-21.  OSU has had better success recently, posting a perfect 5-0 in their last five bowl games.  They’ll be looking to continue that trend tomorrow to prove to themselves that they could have been playing in the Rose Bowl if the game vs. Oregon would have gone their way.  The Beavers are a slim 2 point favorite over the Cougars according to our college football odds, with the total set at 58.5.  Betting college football has never been easier, and Bodog adds to the incentive with a $100 Signup Bonus!

BYU is boasting a four year streak with ten or more wins, and they’re led by play caller Max Hall.  The starting QB has a school record 31 victories under his belt.  He’s found the end zone thirty times this season while throwing 14 int’s, and he did it all with a 67.5% completion percentage.  Suprisingly, his favorite receiver wasn’t a wideout, but tight end Dennis Pitta, who’s proved himself to be a reliable target.  He’s garnered 57 catches for seven scores and owns a school record himself with 216 career receptions.  Harvey Unga turned in a bruising 1016 yard, ten touchdown effort on the season, ensuring the ground game is respected by foes.  On the other side of the ball, BYU was 23rd nationally in run defense, an area they’re sure to be tested in.  Cornerback Andrew Rich leads the secondary with four int’s.  The unit’s contributed to the team’s recent four game winning streak by holding opponents to a 15.75 ppg average over that time.

The Rodgers brothers do just about everything for the Beavers offense.  The RB/WR tandem have been involved 32 of the 46 touchdowns scored.  At RB, Jacquizz has run for twenty scores, caught one and thrown for another.  Meanwhile, his brother has caught 87 passes for nine scores and over 1000 yards, while rushing for one as well. QB Sean Canfield has also been impressive, completing 70% of his throws for over 255 ypg, 21 scores and only 6 picks.  The offense hasn’t had problems putting up points, and they nearly outgunned rival Oregon for a chance to win the Pac-1o and play in the Rose Bowl.  The Beavers were up 33-28 in the 3rd quarter, but the Ducks rallied for nine unanswered points and won 37-33.  It was a disappointing outing for the defense, who allowed 288 yards rushing and another 201 in the air.  While they did manage a fumble recovery and an interception, it wasn’t enough to win the Civil War, and the’ll be looking for redemption tomorrow night.

There’s plenty more free game breakdowns and expert football picks!  With such a close spread both of these teams are very capable of pulling off the victory.  BYU is riding a four game winning streak, while OSU lost their last outing.  Both squads have played some stiff competition and have had plenty of time to prepare.  I like Brigham Young in this one with the statistically better offense and defense and more wins against ranked opponents.  You can also check out more winning college bowl picks at Betfirms.
