Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears Football Predictions

Written October 1, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the Chicago Bears (2-2) will look to keep the Detroit Lions (0-3) winless when the two NFC North teams collide on Sunday. After losing two straight the Bears answered back with a big win last weekend over a solid Philadelphia team, and now sit tied with the Packers atop the North. The Lions came into the season expecting big things after a solid preseason, but that was not the case at all, as they haven’t really been in a game all season, and got smoked in their last game against the 49ers 31-13. Even with home field advantage the oddsmakers got the Lions as 3 point underdogs against the Bears at Bookmaker.com

This weekend the Bears come into Detroit happy to come out wit a win last weekend. The offense continues to keep its trust in quarterback Kyle Orton, and he has done a pretty solid job so far. Orton has only thrown 5 TDs on the season, while throwing 4 picks so its not like he is lighting up the field. The Bears rookie running back Matt Forte continues to be the focus of the offense, as he now has 347 yards, but he to has struggled to find the endzone scoring just one touchdown. Facing the Lions this week could be interesting as the Lions are solid against the run, but have had very little success against the pass. So Orton will have his chances to show he can make some big plays this weekend.

Though the Bears defense at times has looked like the defense that led them to the Super Bowl just a couple years ago, it has had its struggles in 2008. The defense comes in giving up a league worst 388 yards a game, including a staggering 161.2 yards rushing a game. Its likely the offenses struggles to stay on the field have tired this unit out, this defense has to play better though as it has to many playmakers to give up that kind of yardage. The one plus is they have tightened up in the redzone, as they really aren’t giving up a ton of points. So if you like the Bears chances this weekend, bet Bears -3.5 at Bookmaker.com

The Lions get ready to play their 2nd home game of the season, and they have to be hoping that it will give some kind of life to the offense that just hasn’t been producing under new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto. Quarterback Jon Kitna has only 5 touchdowns, and has matched that total with 5 picks as well. While receiver Calvin Johnson has been the go to guy catching a team leading 17 passes for 276 yards, Roy Williams is already questioning his role in this new offensive scheme, as he he only had 8 catches all season. The running game hasn’t been much to speak of either, but Rudi Johnson has started to pick up of late, as he had 14 carries for 83 yards and 3 catches for 48 and a touchdown in the Lions last game against the 49ers. This offense has to get clicking with the defense letting teams score all over them, or its going to be another terrible season in Detroit.

We already mentioned that the Lions are solid against the run as they come in with the 6th best run defense in the league giving up just 84 yards a game, but the pass defense has been no where to be found as they are giving up nearly 215 a game through the air. We already mentioned that the Bears like to run so it will be strength against strength and weakness against weakness. Its likely the winner of the turnover game finishes up on top.
