Detroit Lions vs. Carolina Panthers NFL Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 14, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Life doesn’t get any easier for the winless Detroit Lions this weekend, as they have to travel to take on the NFC South leading Carolina Panthers. Last week the Lions had little hope against the Jaguars, as they 38-14 in front of their home crowd, and if you are thinking this team is going to win on Thanksgiving, they play the Titans. The Panthers won for the 2nd time on the road this season, and its something they better get use to, as 4 of their final 7 are away from home. If you are looking to do some NFL betting on this game, the oddsmakers have the Panthers 14 point favorites over the Lions at BetUS.com

The Lions had looked like they were right on the edge of grabbing that first win, as they had loss their previous 4 games by just an average of 5 points, but they were awful against the Jaguars last week. The Lions wasted little time getting Daunte Culpepper on the field after signing him earlier in the week, but it made no difference for this team, as Culpepper was just 5 of 10 for 104 yards with an interception. The Lions also used rookie Drew Stanton in this one, as he came in and threw a touchdown on his first series, but it looks like Culpepper will still get the nod this week against the Panthers. Last week Kevin Smith had it going on the ground, as he piled on 96 yards on 23 carries and 1 of the two Lions touchdowns. Its going to be hard for this offense to get much of anything going this week on the road against a very good Panthers defense.

Now the Lions defense likely won’t help matters in this one, as they just don’t have the talent to compete with most teams in this league. Last week they were the first team to let Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew run wild in the same game, as they combined for 150 yards, plus 3 scores from Jones-Drew. With the Panthers having the 4th best rushing attack in the league at nearly 144 yards a game, it doesn’t look good for these guys to pull off the big upset. Bet Lions +14 at BetUS.com

Now the Panthers were a little rusty last week against the Raiders scoring just 16 points, and Jake Delhomme didn’t look good at all completing 7 of 27 passes with one touchdown to 4 interceptions. Good thing DeAngelo Williams came to play as the emerging running back pounded out 140 yards on just 19 carries and found the endzone. This offense is much better than the performance they displayed last week, but if they don’t get their act together this week against the Lions its going to be much closer than anyone expects.

Now the defense came to the rescue last week, holding the Raiders to just two third quarter field goals, as they too made life hard on the quarterback interception 2 passes. The Panthers forced 5 fumbles in this one, but only one was able to fall in the arms of the defense. The defense let a number of backs make solid runs in this one, but were able to keep them from making the big play and finding the endzone. We think this defense responds at home, and gives this team a big performance against the Lions. Bet Panthers -14 at BetUS.com
