Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma Sooners Football Spread
Written October 7, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend it doesn’t get better than the Big 12 matchup of the No. 5 Texas Longhorns and the No.1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. With both teams perfect at 5-0 this season, there is no question these are two of the best teams the country has to offer, but the problem is there are two more teams in the Missouri Tigers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders who are also 5-0 and in the top 10. With the Sooners and Longhorns both playing in the same division in the Big 12, the winner of this one by far has a huge advantage of heading to the Big 12 Championship game, and possibly a National Championship. Both teams haven’t had the toughest of competition to start the season, but the oddsmakers are giving the edge to the No. 1 team rightfully so, as Oklahoma comes in as 7 point favorites over Texas at Sportsbook.com
The Longhorns have been working teams on the offensive side of things so far this season, as they have already scored over 50 three times this season, and their worst output was the 38 points they put up last week against Colorado. Quarterback Colt McCoy is quietly having putting together a really good season, as he has already thrown for 1280 yards and 16 touchdowns, while completing nearly 80% of his passes. The one concern that you might have about this offense, is no one has really stepped up in the running game besides McCoy who has 317 yards and 4 scores on just 45 carries. Cody Johnson has got the most reps carrying it 50 times, and while he has 6 scores, he only has 193 yards on the season. On the receiving end of things Quan Cosby leads the way with 32 receptions for 416 yards and 3 scores, but Jordan Shipley has been the man in endzone, as 7 of his 24 catches have gone for a touchdown. McCoy and company will be put to the test this weekend as they face a tough Sooner defense.

The thing is the Longhorns defense isn’t to bad either, as they are giving up right around 12 points a game this season. With Oklahoma this week and Missouri the following there is no question we will find out just how good this defense is. With only 4 returning starters coming into the season, this defense has played lights out so far creating turnovers, and simply shutting down opposing offenses in both the pass and the run. They will have to be good against both this week for sure, as the Sooners have one of the best quarterbacks and running games we have seen so far this season. Bet Texas +7 at Sportsbook.com
Now getting to those Sooners, who have looked like the No. 1 team since the beginning of the season, just beating up on about everyone they have faced. Like Texas the quarterback leads the way, and for the Sooners is Sam Bradford and his 1665 yards passing, and 18 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions. You know the Sooners are putting points on the board when they have a running back combo that has ran for nearly 750 yards and 11 touchdowns along with Bradford’s success. With the way these two teams have played to start the season, its really going to be interesting to see which offense plays the best.
Just like the offenses being so closely matched, the defenses on paper too look like they are evenly matched. Coming into the season the Sooners looked to have the better defense, but its so close its hard telling who is the best, as neither defense has really played a big time offense to start the season. So this could be a defensive slug fest, or the offenses might take over and put on a show in a shootout. There is no question the Sooners have looked better to start the season, but that could change in a hurry this weekend. Bet Oklahoma -7 at Sportsbook.com
