Louisiana-Lafayette at Georgia

The No.21 ranked Georgia Bulldogs will kick off the 2010 season at home against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns this Saturday. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Georgia finished up the 2009 season on a strong note, as they beat up on Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl to push their overal record to 8-5. The Bulldogs went just 4-4 in conference play, and have not not been to the SEC title game since 2005. The Bulldogs must replace their starting quarterback again this season, but the other 10 starters all return, and the defense welcomes in new coordinator Todd Grantham, who will look to improve on a unit that gave up nearly 26 points a game in 2009.

The Ragin’ Cajuns finished the year 6-6 overall, going 4-4 in the Sun Belt Conference. This year they have just 13 starters back, and figure to once again be right in the middle of the pack in the Sun Belt.

The Bulldogs new starting quarterback will be red-shirt freshman Aaron Murray, who comes in very highly rated and I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t surprise a lot of people with what he can do.  I don’t expect a big game out of Murray to start the season, as I look for the Bulldogs to run all over the Ragin’ Cajuns defense behind one of the best offensive lines in the country. There is a lot of hype that the defense is going to be much better this season, and I think we will get a pretty good idea of just how much better they are when they face a much less talented team this weekend.

The Ragin’ Cajuns really slowed down on the offensive side of the ball last season, as they went from scoring 33 points a game to just 22 points a game. With only five starters back for the 2010 season, I think the offense continues it struggles and I will be surprised if they have success moving the ball against a pretty good BCS team. Louisiana does have eight starters back on the defensive side of the ball, and could possibly slow down the Bulldogs offense early before they find their rhythm.

Looking at the Odds: I think you actually have to go with the Ragin’ Cajuns to cover the spread in this one. I think 28.5 is just a little too much for the Bulldogs to cover, as the defense is going to take some time to really improve and you have a freshman quarterback that has no experience. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bulldogs actually struggled early before putting Louisiana away late. My final score prediction is Georgia 34 Louisiana 14.
