Louisville at Cincinnati Football Betting Odds

Written October 23, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

Tony Pike’s status is unclear for this weekend’s matchup versus the Louisville Cardinals, which makes this a very difficult game to handicap. Pike injured his left arm last week against South Florida. The arm already had a plate with several screws in it, and now the arm has had another operation this past week. Brian Kelly says Pike’s status is day-to-day so we probably won’t know the starter for the Bearcats until game day. On the Cardinals side they have struggled this season and sit at just 2-4, so they are looking for a signature win over a top program like Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Bearcats are #5 in the first BCS rankings which were released last weekend. Since they have a tougher schedule than Boise State, most assume they would pass the Broncos if they just keep winning. There is a real possibility Cincinnati could make the title game if they win out. Cincinnati has a dynamic offense that is averaging 41 points and 457 yards per game so far this year. They are primarily a passing team, and they are loaded with talent at wide receiver. The best of the bunch is Mardy Gilyard, who has the ability to take it the distance any time he touches the football. Lost in the hype of the offense is the fact that the defense at Cincinnati is very good. The Bearcats defense is allowing just 14.3 points per game and has stepped up in key situations several times this season.  Sign up for a new account with BetUS to do your college football betting and get a $500 bonus with an initial deposit of $500 or more!

The Louisville Cardinals have had a season of disappointment thus far. At just 2-4 they are definitely not performing up to expectations. Junior Adam Froman has taken over the duties at quarterback of late. Froman has been able to help the team move the ball more effectively, but he is going to have to cut down on turnovers. Victor Anderson has emerged as the top running back threat for the Cardinals, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. The offense has been inconsistent this season and they have failed to put points on the board when it matters the most. The Cardinal defense hasn’t been terrible, but they do give up 28 points per game over the season and 32 points per game in their last 3. Louisville is a team that needs to turn things around quickly or else some changes may be on the horizon.

The Bearcats are favored by 18 in this one according to the most recent NCAA football odds. The posted total is set at 55.5. Louisville is 8-3 in their last 11 matchups with the Bearcats, but Cincinnati is 6-1 in their last 7 Big East conference games.

Even if Tony Pike isn’t able to play in this one the Bearcats probably have too much firepower for the Cardinals, but his status definitely matters to the 18 point spread. Pike has been practicing this week so if he absolutely has to he probably could play, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will. Expect the Bearcats defense to shut down the often inept Louisville offense in this one and the Bearcats to roll on in the Big East.
