LSU at Alabama Football Betting Odds
Written November 3, 2009 by Rock Henderson
The SEC West division will most likely be decided on the field Saturday when the LSU Tigers make the short trek to Alabama to take on the undefeated Crimson Tide. Alabama has had two weeks to prepare for the Tigers after narrowly escaping the upset bid of the Tennessee Volunteers. It will be the third time that Tide head coach Nick Saban has faced his former team and he has split the prior two meetings. If the Crimson Tide can notch their ninth win of the year against LSU, expect a rematch in the SEC Championship game with Florida. Alabama is listed as a 9 point favorite according to the latest NCAA football lines.
For the most part LSU has been impressive this season. After a scare at Mississippi State early on in the season, they gave Florida everything they could handle and dismantled Auburn at home. QB Jordan Jefferson is starting to come into his own as a passer, throwing for 1421 yards and 11 touchdowns through eight games. The amazing thing about this kid is that he is 19 years old and has only thrown four interceptions. Jefferson is able to lean on a strong running game that is led by bruising back Charles Scott. After a slow start, Scott has managed to gain 459 yards and hit the end zone four times. The Tigers will need him to have a huge game if they want to have success against the vaunted Alabama defense. WR Brandon LaFell is playing at an All-SEC level with his 37 catches with eight going for touchdowns. LSU has one of the nastiest defenses in the nation as they have held their last three opponents to a combined 23 points. The secondary is the major strength of the defense, but their run defense is going to have to step up if they want to slow down Heisman frontrunner Mark Ingram. Alabama’s off week could not have came at a better time. Giving Nick Saban a week to prepare for a opponent is plenty of time for him scheme, but two weeks is an eternity for one of the best coaches in the country. One area of concern for the Tide has to be the play of QB Greg McElroy in recent weeks. Against some of the better defenses McElroy has been prone to make mistakes and his completion percentage is only around 50%. LSU will stack the line of scrimmage with 8 and even sometimes 9 guys to stop the run game and force the junior quarterback into making plays. Mark Ingram has been a workhorse for this team. He has eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark rushing and scored a total of 11 touchdowns. With the race for the best player up for grabs, Ingram could take control of the situation with a huge game against the Tigers. If Alabama does decide to pass, you better believe that the ball is going in the direction of star WR Julio Jones. His numbers are lackluster, but he is the one big play threat they have on offense other than Ingram.
LSU has dominated the recent series between these two, winning 7 of the last 9 contests. Alabama broke a 5 game losing streak with a 27-21 OT win in Death Valley last year. The defenses are a wash. Alabama might have the slightly better offense due to the running game. Special teams are pretty even and obviously the Tide have the homefield advantage. LSU is playing for just as much in this game as Alabama. Play: LSU +9
