LSU Tigers at Florida Gators Football Picks & Spread

Written October 6, 2008 by Jason Lowry

If the No. 11 Florida Gators (4-1) really want to get back in the National Championship picture they likely will have to win out in the SEC, and that means taking care of business this weekend when they host the No. 4 LSU Tigers (4-0). The Gators got back to business last week beating up on Arkansas just a week after getting shocked by Mississippi. One thing on the Tigers side this week, is they have had an extra week to prepare for the Gators, as they were off last week. Home field is likely playing a role in this one, as the oddsmakers have the Gators as 4 point favorites over the Tigers at Sportsbook.com.

The Tigers were picked by many to finish behind LSU and Georgia this season in the SEC, but so far it looks like the Tigers might be the team to beat again this season. The biggest win of the season by far is the win over Auburn on their home field, but this weekend we find out just how good this team really is. Quarterback Jarret Lee has done a solid job as the teams new starting quarterback, but the real damage has come from running back Charles Scott, who has ran for 535 yards and 6 scores, with an outstanding 7.5 yards per carry. The offense will have to have it rolling this weekend against the Gators, as they have one of the most explosive offenses in college football.

If the Tigers are going to win this game, it will likely be because of the play of their defense, which has played pretty well this season giving up less than 20 points a game. The defense didn’t have any turnovers in their last game against Mississippi State, but we find it hard for them to take home the win this weekend without getting at least one big turnover from this group. Stopping quarterback Tim Tebow is never easy, as he has the ability to make even the best defenses look like they don’t know what is going on. If the Tigers can shut down the Heisman winner, than this game could swing the other way real fast. Bet LSU +4 at Sportsbook.com

Floirda has had little problem finding the endzone this season, as they are scoring 36 points a game. Quarterback Tim Tebow isn’t quite putting up the numbers he did last year, but he still playing some good football, as he has thrown for over a 1,000 yards and 8 scores, while only throwing 1 interception. The running game got going last week as the Gators ran 38 times for 278 yards, as Chris Rainey and Jeffrey Demps combined for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 17 carries. Percy Harvin remains the do it all player, running out of the backfield and leading the team in receiving. The Gators will need to make some big plays this weekend, against a very tough LSU defense.

The Gators defense has been absolutely great this season except for the game against Mississippi where they gave up 31 points. They are the only team to score more than 10 points against this defense, and you have to wonder if the Gators just simply weren’t ready for that game. We will really find out a lot about this defense this week and the weeks to come, as the Gators have Kentucky, Georgia, and Vandy in their next 3 games. If the defense is able to shut the Tigers offense down, this game could wind up not even being as close as they are predicting. Bet Florida -4 at Sportsbook.com
