LSU at Georgia College Football Odds

Written September 30, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The marquee SEC match-up of the week will take place in Athens, Georgia this Saturday when the #4 LSU Tigers make the short trek to take on the #18 Georgia Bulldogs. The Bayou Bengals narrowly escaped a major upset against Mississippi State in their conference opener as a goal line stand was needed to secure the 30-26 victory.

Georgia has rattled off three straight wins after their loss at Oklahoma State that includes a game winning field goal against Arizona State as time expired. The Bulldogs stunned LSU last year 52-38 in a game that broke a streak of 30 consecutive Saturday wins at Tiger Stadium. The line opened as a pick em’, but the current college football odds have moved to Georgia being favored by 3.  The over/under for the game sits at 52.5 points.

It might not have been the prettiest three wins of Mark Richt’s career, but Georgia is back on track for a January Bowl after SEC wins at Arkansas and at home against South Carolina. The Bulldog defense was much improved against the Sun Devils after getting blitzed for 37 and 41 points the prior two weeks. They will need a similar effort against LSU if a 3-0 conference start is warranted.

Offensively, Georgia has been led by QB Joe Cox. The senior signal caller has thrown for 245 yards per game and nine touchdowns through four games, but has to cut down on the turnovers as he has tossed five interceptions. Turnovers are an area of concern for this team as they are now minus nine for the year but still have managed to win three of four games.

Georgia opponents have turned 12 turnovers into 54 points while the Bulldogs have only scored six points off of opposing miscues. WR AJ Green is finally starting to show why he was tagged as the next big time player at UGA. The sophomore wideout has amassed 428 yards and four touchdowns.

Those numbers were aided by an eight catch 153 yard performance against Arizona State.  Don’t miss out on this limited-time $500 match bonus from BetUS.  It’s for players that want to take their college football betting to the next level.

LSU should consider themselves fortunate that they were able to move up in the polls after a lackluster win at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs had 1st and goal from the 1 yard line, but were unable to punch it in with under a minute to play on three consecutive tries to let LSU off the hook.

The Tigers have been led by sophomore QB Jordan Jefferson and his seven touchdown passes with only one interception. His main target has been WR Brandon Lafell who has been the recipient of five touchdown passes. RB Charles Scott has struggled in the early going of 2009 after having a monster 2008 season in which he rushed for 1174 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The offensive line might have much to do with the struggling running game as two starters were lost from last year’s unit. SS Chad Jones was named SEC special teams player of the week after his 93 yard punt return for a touchdown gave the Tigers a 30-21 lead against MSU.

No team is more overrated in my opinion than the fourth ranked LSU Tigers. Their 4-0 record is the result of a weak schedule and a few lucky bounces. Georgia hasn’t exactly made a statement that they will be able to challenge Florida for the SEC East crown, but a win Saturday would send a strong message.

Rock Henderson’s Play: Georgia -3
