Margarito v. Mosley Odds & Predictions

Written January 22, 2009 by Jack Jones

Margarito Mosley OddsThis Saturday will feature a welterweight title fight between Antonio Margarito and “Sugar” Shane Mosley.  The odds makers at BetUS are currently listing Margarito as the heavy -500 favorite with Mosley getting 3-1 odds (read our BetUS sportsbook review to find out why this site is a must have for bonus hunters).

Boxing fans almost didn’t get a chance to see these two square away with Margarito unhappy about the money being split with Mosley 50/50.  Margarito felt like he was the bigger draw, and coupled with him being the title holder he should be entitled to more cash.  Luckily, HBO stepped up and gave Margarito some additional cash to ease the tensions and keep the fight alive.

Margarito won the welterweight title when he stopped Miguel Angel Cotto in an epic battle that saw plenty of powerful blows being thrown and landed.  There is no doubt that Margarito has a strong will to win, has plenty of power, and can take a blow.  The slug fest with Cotto was a great fight to watch as both fighters took the best the other had to offer, but Margarito was just too much for Cotto.

The action in the Cotto fight has made Margarito one of the more exciting draws in boxing.  People around the boxing world are still talking about his comeback win and just how tough he looked after taking so many powerful Cotto hits.

Mosley is getting older and has slowed down quite a bit.  He definitely doesn’t offer as exciting of a style as Margarito does and he is coming off an ugly 12th round knockout over Ricardo Mayorga in September, a fight that he might not have won if it had gone to a decision.  It appeared to me that Mosley wasn’t prepared for that fight and had overlooked Mayorga, but he claims that blisters on his right foot hampered his performance.

This fight sort of reminds me of the Manny Pacquiao/Oscar De La Hoya fight a few months ago.  You have an aging fighter like De La Hoya taking on a champion that is much younger than him.  The results are probably going to be the same here as when De La Hoya took his beating.  Cotto beat Mosley back in November 2007, and Margarito stopped Cotto so the thinking is that Margarito should handle Mosley as well.  It’s hard for me to argue with that.

With the technical approach Mosley has, a strong will to win, and a great chin I think that this fight will go to a decision.  However, Margarito is the better fighter and should come away with an easy win.   I’m going to take Margarito and the OVER 10.5 round at BetUS.

FAIL more with your prediction idiot. If you were smart like the rest of us you would’ve bet 3:1 odds on Mosley. This was the easiest pick of the century, margarito is so overrated.
