MLB Predictions: Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels
Written September 8, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Mariners continue to fight hard and play with a sense of urgency. At 72-66 on the season, Seattle has proved they are doing anything but throwing in the towel. Ichiro Suzuki is in a close race with Minnesota’s Joe Mauer for the AL batting title as he’s hitting .362 from the dish. Jose Lopez, the M’s second baseman has been one of the more unnoticed players in the game this year putting up 22 homers and 84 RBIs. Russell Branyan, while struggling of late, has provided a big power boost hitting a team lead 31 homers and adding 76 RBIs. You add center fielder Franklin Gutierrez to the mix who has given this team a gold glove caliber fielder and you have a bright future ahead. On the mound tonight for Seattle is one of the AL Cy Young candidates this season in Felix Hernandez who posts a 14-5 record with a 2.65 ERA. Now, let me explain why he will not only be lights out, but have complete game shutout stuff tonight. On the road this year King Felix is 8-2 with a 2.06 ERA in 15 starts away from home. In three starts against the Angels this season he has gone 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA. With the exception of last season when he had a down year, Hernandez was lights out in 2007 going undefeated in September and October. In this game he faces another hard thrower who will look to match him pitch by pitch. I expect an eight inning (possible CG) performance from Felix tonight with no more than one earned run. Jose Lopez will have a big game and help his team gain a tough road victory. The Seattle Mariners are 4-2 in their last six games overall. Tuesday’s baseball lines have installed the Angels as -119 favorites against the Mariners with a total set for 8 runs.
The Angels are led by Torii Hunter, Vlad Guerrero and Kendry Morales. While Guerrero and Vlad have been hurt, Morales has hit 30 homers and 95 RBIs while hitting .313 from the plate. Juan Rivera has also been a bright light for this team providing 21 home runs and 76 RBIs while hitting .294 from the plate. Free agent signee this past off-season, Bobby Abreu has posted 13 homers and 90 RBIs to date while hitting .299 from the plate. I have said all season long, the Halos are the most well-balanced team in baseball. They have a serious dose of speed with Figgins and Erick Aybar before you get to the big sluggers in Vlad, Hunter and Morales. Pitching wise, that’s another story. Manager Mike Scioscia hopes he cured some of those problems with waiver acquisition Scott Kazmir. His numbers show an 8-8 record with a 5.68 ERA. Those stats don’t tell you the half of how electric he is. In his first start as a member of the LAA he went 6.1 innings allowing three hits and two runs (only one of those runs was earned) while striking out eight batters. The problem was, he faced Seattle and their monster ace Felix Hernandez who went 8 innings allowing no runs on only four hits as he dazzled shutting down the halos with extreme ease. What I am interested to see is how much intensity Kazmir will come out with tonight. Scott has been questioned before about his lack of killer mentality on the mound, his lack of desire to be great. Tonight, he certainly will get his prime time game to prove so in a rematch against one of the game’s best pitchers. If the Angels are to win this game lead off man Chone Figgins will need to play a big part in it as base runners and stolen bases will be the key for the home team.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: Seattle is 8-2 in Hernandez’s last 10 road starts. The Mariners are 20-8 in Felix’s last 28 starts overall. The Under is 12-5-1 in Hernandez’s last 18 starts on grass. The Angels are 6-4 in their last 10 games overall. The Mariners are 9-7 in their 16 meetings against the Angels this season. As stated above, Felix owns this team and has been lights out this whole season. The picks are below, the prediction is just that.
