Baseball Picks: Seattle Mariners at Baltimore Orioles
Written June 10, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Seattle Mariners are 28-30 on the season which surprises me a whole lot. They have a weak lineup and a pitching staff that is pitching way over their heads. Ichiro has been fantastic since coming back from his injury hitting .356 with five homers and 17 RBIs. The man with the pop in his bat this year has been Russell Branyan. He has supplied the M’s with 13 homers and 26 RBIs while also hitting .322 from the plate. Adrian Beltre and Jose Lopez both have 20+ RBIs as well but their averages have been down. So as you can see their is not much power on this team and it is very approachable as a pitcher. The ace of their staff, Felix Hernandez, will take the mound tonight. He has had a solid year so far with a 5-3 record and a 3.22 ERA. Last season Felix went 0-1 in three starts against Baltimore with a 1.80 ERA. He struck out 19 batters in 20 innings of work in those starts. The lack of run support there is blatant. While Branyan has been the guy in the middle of the order this team counts on, the x-factor is still Ichiro. He must get on base and give the guys behind him chances to drive him home as runs will be at a premium. Wednesday’s baseball lines have the Seattle Mairners as -115 money line favorites over the Orioles with the total set at 8.5 runs.
The Baltimore Orioles are 25-33 on the year and are struggling of late. Scoring runs is not their problem. Adam Jones is hitting .346 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs (42 runs scored). Nick Markakis has seven homers and 39 RBIs (38 runs scored). Brian Roberts has six homers and 22 RBIs (43 runs scored) with a .279 batting average. So runs will come a plenty and that does not include guys like Aubrey Huff and rookie Nolan Reimold hitting well. The pitching on the other hand, has been an utter disaster. Jeremy Guthrie is 4-5 with a 5.61 ERA. He takes the mound tonight looking to come up with a big start. His stuff is much better then his numbers show and he has a history of pitching well against big time pitchers. In three starts against Seattle last year he went 1-1 in three starts with a 2.28 ERA. Those are very similar stats to Felix Hernandez when he faces Baltimore. Look for Nick Markakis to play a huge roll in this game. It will be low scoring and if the top of the order can get to Felix early Baltimore should get a W.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Mariners are 6-4 in their last 10 games overall. Baltimore is 6-2 in their last eight home games. The Orioles are 11-29 in their last 40 Wednesday games. In the Head to head match up, Baltimore is 10-4 in the last 14 games. Picks below.
Jordan’s Picks: Orioles -105 & UNDER 8.5 Runs
Another BEST BET hit with the Cubs along with the medium play hit with Dodgers RL. The win streak for best bets have reached four in a row. Unfortunately we lost the OVER in the Cubs game by one runs but still managed a very high profit for the night. Lets keep the streak alive tonight. Comments always welcome.
