MLB Picks: Florida Marlins at Los Angeles Dodgers
Written July 24, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Marlins are 49-47 on the season and currently on a three game winning streak. Nobody talks abut the fish as serious contenders in the NL wild card, that is a big mistake. With the second best player in the game in Hanley Ramirez and a very good young rotation, Florida will compete. Hanley is hitting .348 with 15 homers and 62 RBIs. Considering his missed some time with injuries those numbers are staggering. Jorge Cantu has been a solid addition this season. He is hitting .287 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs. Dan Uggla has really struggled with his swing which has resulted in a .232 batting average. You sprinkle in guys like Cody Ross and rookie Chris Coghlan and you have an okay lineup. On the mound tonight is one of the biggest pitching stories of the year. Josh Johnson is 8-2 with a 2.74 ERA. He has been dominant from jump street this season. While Josh has a higher ERA on the road then at home, he has a lower ERA during night starts then day outings. So that is a wash. He has averaged an under 3.00 ERA in every month this season. Expect him to pitch very well tonight and for him to keep his team in the game. As the year gets older games like this for teams in the wild card hunt become crucial. Josh Johnson is the man Florida wants on the mound tonight. Friday’s MLB odds show the Dodgers -150 over the Marlins, with the over/under set for 7 runs.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently on a five game winning streak. Matt Kemp and Manny Ramirez have been raking the ball. Orlando Hudson and James Loney have been solid all year long while the pitching has been brilliant. Los Angeles is the most well balanced team in baseball, they hit .274 at a team from the plate which is amongst the leagues best. On the mound for the National League’s best team is young Clayton Kershaw who has been as good as any pitcher of late. Check out this stat. Kershaw has allowed only three earned runs in his last 42.2 innings pitched. Unbelievable. In his only start against Florida this season he went 7 innings allowing only one run on 4 hits and picking up the victory. His ERA is 1.62 at home as opposed to his 4.41 ERA on the road. His ERA in night starts is 2.47 as opposed to his 4..01 ERA during night outings. Kershaw will continue his recent shut down performance. Now, he is facing a pitcher who is just as talented and game as he is. Johnson in my mind will cause the Dodgers all sorts of havoc. Well, do you catch my drift?
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Marlins are 25-8 in Johnson’s last 33 starts. Florida is 5-5 in their last 10 games overall. The Dodgers are 53-23 in their last 76 home games. Los Angeles is also 43-19 in their last 62 games as the favorite. The UNDER is 8-3-1 in the last 12 games in LA. In the head to head area, Florida is 6-2 against the Dodgers in their last eight meetings. Both Johnson and Kershaw have an ERA of under 3.00 for the year. The O/U sits at 7. TAKE THE UNDER.
