Florida Marlins at Colorado Rockies Picks & Predictions
Written May 8, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Marlins started the season as one of the hottest teams in baseball. They have been anything but that over the past two weeks.. Florida is 15-14 and currently are on a three game losing streak. They open up a three game series at Coors field against the Rockies tonight. Hanley Ramirez, one of baseballs best is coming off a two home run night yesterday. Coors field is a sandbox of a ball park, if he swings the bat like that tonight, it could spell trouble for Colorado. Hanley has been plagued by injuries early in the year but has still seemed to hit .295 with five homers and 15 RBIs. First Baseman Jorge Cantu has been tremendous hitting .326 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs. The fish have gotten good production from Cody Ross, Emilio Bonifacio and Dan Uggla as well. Jeremy Hermida is off to a slow start and they will need his production to pick up as the season gets older. Pitching wise the Marlins have been above average overall. Tonight’s starter was their projected ace in Ricky Nolasco. Ironically, he has been the one who has struggled the most. In his first six starts he is 1-3 with an ERA of 7.03. That is completely unacceptable and shocking as most analysts expected this guy to be a break out star (myself included). Now, the season is still young and Nolasco certainly has the ability to turn his year around. So, lets start tonight. Last season he had one start verse the Rockies and dominated them going 8 innings allowing three runs on four hits and striking out 13 batters. This game is made for the Marlins to exploit. Whether they do it or not is yet to be seen. Friday’s baseball odds show the Rockies -114 over the Marlins with the total set at 11 runs.
The Colorado Rockies are coming off an 8-3 loss yesterday afternoon to the Giants. They are 11-16 on the season and have looked even worse then that. The hitting production has been spread out as eight different Rockies have three home runs. Catcher Chris Iannetta leads the team with six home runs. Todd Helton and Brad Hawpe lead the team with 17 RBIs each. There is no one dominant player on this team that can be counted on in a big spot. The Rockies pitching staff is much improved this year. Ubaldo Jimenez is a rising star while Franklin Morales has begun to establish himself as well. Tonight’s starter Jason Hammel is new to the rotation. He has had two starts so far. One against San Diego in which he got rocked going three innings while allowing seven hits and four earned runs. He then bounced back with a quality start against San Francisco going six innings without allowing a run. Brad Hawpe and Todd Helton will be this teams focal point tonight and for the entire season. They are the combination that will provide leadership and consistent power. Tonight they will face a Marlins team hungry for a win. Tough match up.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Marlins are 6-2 in their last eight Friday games. Florida is 3-7 in their last 10 road games. The Rockies are 5-3 against the Marlins in their last eight meetings. Tonight, that record will become 5-4. This is going to be Nolasco’s coming out party and Hanley is coming off his best game of the year. Cantu has been crushing the ball. This line is ludicrous. Why the Rockies are favored I can not figure out. This is a slam dunk, home run, monster of a BEST BET. Lock City. The pick is below.
Betting Line: Colorado Rockies -114/Florida Marlins +104
Jordan’s Pick: Florida Marlins +104 (BEST BET)

Got something to say?

Love the Marlins today. Better pitcher, better team who loves to hit righties. If Cook can’t keep his sinker down, Florida has a chance of blowing the Rockies out early.
