marquette-uconn-picks-022409The Bradley Center will host a high stakes clash of Big East titans this Wednesday night when the no. 10 Marquette Golden Eagles host the no. 2 ranked Connecticut Huskies. Connecticut was knocked off America’s number 1 ranking by Big East foe Pittsburgh last week and with some luck from Oklahoma and North Carolina both losing they still retain the #2 spot in the country. However, they are among a 4 way tie for first place in America’s best basketball conference which is highlighted by those same 4 teams all in the Top 10 in the country. Marquette is the team that has really had a breakout season and they have some tall odds stacked against them. The Golden Eagles next 3 games include all those schools in that first place tie with match-ups with #1 Pittsburgh and #6 Louisville to follow Wednesday nights showdown. However, the Eagles have surprised many this season and they will get the opportunity to do more of the same of the next two weeks of the regular season.

Marquette is a fast pace team that can get really hot from the floor. The Golden Eagles have shot a fairly strong 47% from the field as a team this season. Marquette also leads the high power Big East Conference in scoring posting 80 points every single outing. The Golden Eagles biggest test in this game will overcoming a slower paced Connecticut team that can control the tempo of the game beating teams up on the boards and playing disciplined basketball on both ends of the floor. Marquette ranks toward the very bottom in the conference with 35 rebounds per game while the Huskies lead the conference and also ranks 2nd nationally with 42 boards per contest.

The Golden Eagles must be able to not allow the Huskies to dominate the glass and also move the ball down the floor rather quickly and attempt to score points in transition. Leading the offensive attack for the Golden Eagles is senior guard Jerel McNeal. McNeal has been wonderful down the stretch scoring at least 20 points or more in 10 of his last 11 games. Aiding McNeal will be another one of the best guards in the conference in senior Wesley Matthews who is averaging 18 points per game. These two stellar guards will likely be the difference in the ball game and how they are able to penetrate the Connecticut defense.

The Connecticut Huskies will attempt to avoid losing their second game in only two weeks this Wednesday night as they will try to grab what is always a tough win on the road in the stellar Big East. Connecticut has played extremely well against potent offenses so far this season with one of the best defenses in college basketball. The Huskies lead the Big East in scoring defense holding teams to only 61 points per game for the season. Connecticut big defensive guys will try and keep one of the most talented backcourts in America in check this Wednesday. The Huskies on the other hand could really do their own damage inside the paint if they could get the right help from their big men.

Connecticut has a rather balanced starting lineup that could get big number from any different player. Jeff Adrien leads 4 Connecticut players in double figures with 13.8 points per game. However, one of the biggest guys in the nation will likely be the most intriguing to watch. Junior Hasheem Thabeet stands at a whopping 7’3 and is really learning how to be a dominating presence. Thabeet come of one of his career high performances a few games ago against Seton Hall win he posted 25 points and 20 rebounds. The junior center is averaging double-double numbers with 13 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and will likely be the key to the Huskies success on Wednesday night.
