The Marshall Thundering Herd hit the road Thursday to take on the Memphis Tigers in Conference USA action. The Herd have had their way with the Tigers of late, winning each of the last three meetings in this series. Marshall won last year’s meeting at home by a final of 28-13. After trailing 10-0 at the half, the Herd exploded for four touchdowns after intermission. Brian Anderson threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns for Marshall.
Taking a look at the college football spreads for Week 12, I find a line of Marshall -11.5 over Memphis.
Marshall
The Thundering Herd are still alive for a postseason bowl berth. After they play Memphis on Thursday, they will host East Carolina next Saturday to close out their season. Marshall (4-6, 3-3 C-USA) is coming off an embarrassing 59-17 road loss to Tulsa. They trailed 42-3 at the half before the Golden Hurricane took their foot off of the gas the rest of the way.
Marshall was outgained 682-393 by Tulsa as they allowed more than 300 yards both on the ground and through the air. Rakeem Cato threw for 163 yards and one touchdown with one interception for the Herd. Travon Van was one bright spot for Marshall, rushing for 114 yards on just 17 carries while also scoring a touchdown. Aaron Dobson caught three balls for 65 yards and the lone scoring pass from Cato.
The Herd rank just 99th in the land in total offense (328.6 yards/game) and 94th in total defense (432.5 yards/game). Cato is completing 56.1 percent of his passes for 1,353 yards with 10 touchdowns to eight interceptions. Dobson leads all receivers with 36 catches for 455 yards and eight touchdowns. Tron Martinez (466 yards, one TD) and Van (401 yards, one TD) are No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in rushing, respectively.
Memphis
The Tigers simply have not been able to get things turned around this season. Memphis (2-8, 1-5 C-USA) is coming off a very disheartening home loss to UAB last Saturday. They led 35-17 at the end of three quarters and appeared well on their way to a victory. However, the Blazers mounted a ferocious comeback in the fourth quarter. UAB outscored the Tigers 24-0 in the final period to steal away a 41-35 win.
Memphis allowed UAB to total 601 yards of offense in a very weak defensive effort. The Tigers did muster up 384 total yards, including 167 passing and two touchdowns from quarterback Taylor Reed. Jerrell Rhodes rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while Billy Foster chipped in 87 yards and a score on only 10 attempts. Foster also caught three balls for a team-high 79 yards.
This will be Senior Night for the Tigers, who will close out their season with a trip to Southern Miss next Saturday. Memphis ranks 113th in the FBS in total offense (283.3 yards/game) and 114th in total defense (505.9 yards/game). Reed has played well this year, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 1,581 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. Foster has rushed for a team-high 457 yards and five touchdowns. Tannar Rehrer is their leading receiver with 54 grabs for 449 yards and four scores.
Betting Trends
The Thundering Herd are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. loss, but just 8-22-2 ATS in their last 32 games as a road favorite. That includes an 0-6 ATS mark in their last 6 as a road favorite of 10.5 or more.
The Tigers are 8-22 ATS in their last 31 games as an underdog, 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games, and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a home underdog.
