Maryland at Villanova

The seventh-ranked Villanova Wildcats will go for their 11th straight win when they host the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday. Villanova improved to 15-1 and 4-0 in the Big East with a 88-74 win over No. 18 Louisville on Wednesday. After nearly beating No.1 Duke on Sunday, Maryland crushed Wake Forest 74-55 on the road, but need a big win to get things turned around. The Terrapins are 11-5 overall and just 1-2 in ACC play. Our odds have the Wildcats favored by 5.5-points over the Terrapins at home.

While the Terrapins haven’t exactly got off to the start they were hoping for, four of their five losses have came against teams that are currently ranked in the Top 25. Maryland has been in every game they have played, with no loss coming by more than nine points.

Maryland relies heavily on the play of sophomore forward Jordan Williams, who recorded his 10th straight double-double with 13 points and and 15 rebounds against Wake Forest. Williams played a huge role in the Terrapins near win over Duke in the previous game, scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

While Williams can carry the Terrapins against a lot of teams, he is going to need some help for Maryland to pull off the upset. Senior Cliff Tucker is the only other player averaging double figures for Maryland at 11.9 points a game, and he is going to have to have a big game against the Wildcats. Tucker is the Terrapins biggest threat from the outside, and has made at least two three-pointers in five of his last seven games.

Villanova has a number of guys that can beat you, as they no longer are a team that simply relies on the play of their guards. While senior guards Corey Stokes (17 ppg) and Corey Fisher (15.3 ppg) do most of the scoring, Mouphtaou Yarou and Antonio Pena have been a force down low for the Wildcats.

Yarou and Pena both average around 9-10 points and grab just over seven rebounds a game. Yarou racked up his fourth straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Louisville. There focus however in this game will be more on shutting down Williams than putting up a bunch of points.

Getting this game at home is a huge advantage for the Wildcats, as they have yet to lose on their home court this season. I think Villanova will be able to at least control Williams, but Maryland however has been a tough team to put away, and while they likely won’t win this game, I think you have to take the points and bet the Terrapins.
