Maryland vs Virginia Tech Football Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 5, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This Thursday football fans get a couple good games, and we are going to take a closer look at the ACC battle that has the newly ranked No. 23 Maryland Terrapins (6-2) traveling to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. As for the Terrapins they come in hot after their 2nd straight win, and most recently a 27-24 win over North Carolina State. The Hokies didn’t have the same success in their last game as they fell 20-30 to Florida State, but a week off could really have helped this team to finish strong. The oddsmakers maybe see just that happening, as the Hokies come in 3.5 point favorites over the Terrapins at Bookmaker.com

Now a lot of it has to do with the Terrapins being on the road this weekend, and if they want to stay in the top 25 they are going to have to prove they can win on the road, as they have looked bad in two of their 3 road games this season. The key for Maryland this week will be to get the offense going outside of their home stadium, and that means they are going to need another big week out of running back Da’Rel Scott who had 163 yards and a score last week. Quarterback back Chris Turner didn’t have a very good day completing just 9 of 20 passes for 126 yards, and his play will need to be at a much higher level if they want to win on the road this weekend.

Now another big key is the play of the defense, who too has lowered its play in games away from the home crowd. If the Terrapins want to make a run and stay in the top 25, but a win this week guarantees they keep their 1 game lead in the Atlantic division. Their latest performance against NC State wasn’t the teams best effort giving up 342 yards, but it was enough to rack up another victory. We see this one being pretty tight from start to finish, and here is your chance to Bet Maryland +3.5 at Bookmaker.com

Virginia Tech has now lost two straight and what once looked like a team that had a shot to come out of the ACC is now fighting for its life to just stay alive. The Hokies most recent loss against the Seminoles was a tough one to swallow, and the offense continues to be hurt by their lack of play at the quarterback position. The Hokies have had very little success throwing the ball all season, and have just 2 throwing touchdowns on the season. That means running back Darren Evans is going to have to put on a show this weekend, or the Hokies might wind up losing for the 3rd straight game.

The defense for the Hokies has played pretty well on the season, but one thing we have taken notice is the defense really comes to play at home, as all 3 of the Hokies losses this season have been on the road. This is likely the reason the Hokies come in as the favorites in this one, we aren’t sold on the defense making the big stops this weekend, as we see this coming down to the wire.
