Maryland at West Virginia

This Saturday the No.21 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers will host the Maryland Terrapins in non-conference play. West Virginia moved to 2-0 on the season with a come from behind win at Marshall last week, as they came away with a 24-21 overtime victory. The Terrapins also come into the game at 2-0, as they crushed Morgan State 62-3 at home last Saturday. If you are looking to wager on the game this weekend, the current odds have West Virginia favored by 10-points over Maryland at home.

West Virginia actually trailed Marshall 21-6 with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but two late touchdowns and a 2-point conversion tied it up at 21 all at the end of regulation. The Mountaineers were able to hold off the Thundering Herd after netting a field goal on their first overtime possession to grab the win.

Running back Noel Devine finished with 112 yards and a touchdown, for his second straight 100 yard game. Quarterback Geno Smith ended up having a pretty good game throwing the football, as he completed 32 of 45 passes for 316 yards, including a five yard touchdown strike to Will Johnson. Sophomore wide Tavon Austin continues to be the Mountaineers biggest threat on the outside, as he hauled in nine passes for 85 yards.

The Terrapins had no trouble at all with Morgan State, as they cruised to a 45-0 halftime lead. The game was so out of hand that the Terrapins pulled most of their starters in the second quarter. Starting quarterback Jamarr Robinson and backup Danny O’Brien combined to go 11 for 24 for just 149 yards, but still managed to throw five touchdowns.

Maryland also had success running the ball in the win, as they finished with 221 yards on the ground. Redshirt freshman DJ Adams finished with a team best 70 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, while Da’Rel Scott and Davin Meggett combined for 92 yards on 16 carries. I believe that the Terrapins are going to need another strong game on the ground this weekend, if they want to come into West Virginia and grab a win.

Looking at the Odds: Even though the Mountaineers struggled last week against Marshall, I think you have to take them to cover the 10-point spread at home against Maryland. The Terrapins are just 3-7 against non-conference BCS schools since 2004, while the Mountaineers have won 13 straight non-conference BCS games at home. I believe the Terrapins are going to have a hard time stopping Devine and the Mountaineer rushing attack, and I think the Terrapins are going to struggle on offense in their first road contest of the season. My final score prediction is West Virginia 27, Maryland 13.
