2008 Masters Predictions & Preview
Written by Jack Jones
We are just a couple weeks away from one of golf’s biggest tournaments of the year. On April 10 – 13 golfers will get ready to tee off in the first of four majors at The Masters. The Masters is unlike the other 3 majors, in that it is played on the same course every single year. Augusta National is the stomping ground for this tournament that got started back in 1934. Last year Zach Johnson was able to hold off Tiger Woods, to come out of nowhere for his first major championship. Last year Augusta proved that it could be one of the harder courses on tour, as Johnson’s winning score was +1. Along with winning the tournament players are rewarded with a green jacket that has been a Master’s tradition for years. The previous winner gets the honors of rewarding the present winner the jacket, so Johnson will be handing out a green jacket this year, unless he repeats, then Phil Mickelson will get the honors once again. The hype surrounding this years Masters, is Tiger Woods and can quest to win all 4 majors this year, and move another win closer to Jack Nicklaus’s record of major victories. Here is our prediction on who you can count on seeing in contention when the final round rolls around.
Favorite: Tiger Woods 1/1
There is no way we aren’t picking this guy to win. While Tiger finished 5th in his last tournament, he was far from the guy that started the season with three straight wins. Tiger just couldn’t get the putter going to make a run, and still finished two shots off the lead. Look for Tiger to come into the Masters more focused than ever, as this last little stumble will only fuel him to do even better. This is where Tiger really got the attention of the world when he won it back in 1997. Since then Tiger has taken home 3 more green jackets and will be looking for his fifth this year.
Next in Line: Vijay Singh 22/1
Vijay has really caught our eyes over the last couple tournaments. He is really striking the ball well, and the scary thing is, he is really starting to putt better. He has always been a solid driver and one of the best at hitting the greens in regulation, but when it came down to making the big putts Singh rarely comes through. He is coming off a solid performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he was one bad round from taking home the trophy. Then in his last tournament at the CA Championship he was able to take home a second place finish. Another reason we like Vijay is that he has won at Augusta before back in 2000. Everything looks primed for a Tiger vs. Singh showdown on Sunday.
Long Shot: Justin Rose 40/1
Rose is our big sleeper this year. Last year marked only the third time Rose has participated in the Masters, and he came in firing for a 5th place finish. He has continued to get better and better each year, and could be ready for a break out performance at the Masters. The majors are unlike any other tournament during the year, as they require your very best at some of the toughest courses there is. Last year Rose just didn’t stop after his good finish at the Masters, as he finished in the top 12 of all 4 major tournaments. So if you are looking to make a small bet with a big reward, Rose is your guy.
