Memphis College Football Predictions 2009
Written July 6, 2009 by InfoPlays
Memphis has had to make great comebacks in each of the last two seasons to earn bowl bids. Last year, the Memphis Tigers started 0-3 before winning 6 of their final 9 games to earn a .500 mark and a trip to the St. Petersburg Bowl. The Tigers will have to start fast and finish strong to earn their first C-USA title in 13 years. Winning a division title is possible with the talent coach Tommy West has on board, but East Carolina and Southern Miss will provide difficult obstacles in the East. Futures NCAA football lines are already posted, and the start of the regular season is just around the corner. Sign up with Sportsbook.com to earn a 10% bonus and reduced juice on Friday’s.
Offense: Memphis returns only 4 starters on offense, but three of them are their best skill players from a year ago with quarterback Arkelon Hall, running back Curtis Steele and receiver Carlos Singleton. After transferring from California junior college, Hall started in 2008 and should be much more efficient in the Tigers’ spread offense this season. He completed 191 of 335 passes for 2,275 yards, to go along with 12 touchdowns and 7 interceptions last year. Steele was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year after rushing for 1,223 yards last fall. He’ll get backup help from Wisconsin transfer Lance Smith. Smith had an impressive spring and his acceleration will combine with Steele to make one of the best 1-2 punches in all of C-USA in the backfield.
The Tigers are stacked at wide receiver. Seniors Carlos Singleton and Duke Calhoun will be on the field at the same time for the first time in their careers. These two should finish as the school’s top two all-time pass catchers by season’s end. Singleton is tall receiver at 6-8, and this big red zone target has caught 19 career touchdown receptions. Calhoun has 144 career catches for 2,058 yards. They’ll be joned by spring game offensive MVP Marcus Rucker and speedy sophomore slot Cam Baker. The offensive line will need to grow up quickly with just 1 returning starter in RG Dominik Riley who’ll team up with 3 sophomores along the front.

Defense: If the defense is going to take the next step forward, it will need big contributions from several talented transfers. Redshirt freshman defensive back DeRon Furr, who signed originally with Auburn, was name the defensive MVP of the spring game and he has the talent to become a playmaking safety for the Tigers for years to come. Linebackers Jamon Hughes from Mississippi State and Derrick Odom from LSU will be factors at a position that returns three starters.
Defensive tackle Justin Thompson was one of the nation’s best junior college line prospects a year after signing with Oregon. Thompson was a playmaker this spring for the Tigers. The secondary must step up for the Tigers to survive in pass-happy C-USA, and new coordinator Kenny Ingram has made it a top priority. Free safety Furr should be a solid starter, Alton Starr is a veteran returnee at safety, and D.A. Griffin is their top cover corner.
