Memphis Michigan State Picks, Predictions, & Odds
The action out of the South Region is moving to Houston, TX. Here lies #1 Memphis and #5 Michigan State. The Spartans will try and prove they are for real as they try and be only the second team to beat Memphis this season, on the other hand the Memphis doubters are back in full force after a close call to make it to the Sweet 16.#1 Memphis comes into the Sweet 16 as a real threat to win the National Championship, but they will need to play more like they did when they beat #16 Texas Arlington, and less like they did against #8 Mississippi State. Memphis’s only loss on the season came in a classic against Tennessee back when Memphis was #1 and Tennessee was #2. While the Tigers do play in a weak conference, they did have a tough non-conference schedule, with wins against the likes of UCONN, Oklahoma, USC, and Arizona. The Tigers are well known for their dribble drive motion offense they put into play this season. They are led by junior Chris Douglas-Roberts and his 17.3 PPG and freshman Derrick Rose who comes in averaging 14.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists a game.
#5 Michigan State came into the season as predicted top 10 team, but never seemed to get things going and continued to fall as the season went on. The Spartans just might have finally got things going in the right direction again as it was picked by many to lose to #12 Temple, but beat them by 11. Those that picked them to get out of the first round didn’t give them much of a chance at all against #4 Pitt, but they went ahead and beat them by 11-points too. They do have a win against Texas earlier in the season and with a win against Memphis could be looking at a rematch with the Longhorns. The Spartans are led by Raymar Morgan and his 14.2 PPG and 6.1 RPG and senior Drew Neitzel who when he gets it going so does the rest of the team. Neitzel dropped in a team high 21 in their last game against Pitt.
Michigan State just won’t have the firepower to stay with the Tiger in this game. The Spartans are a good team, but they are running into a very good Memphis team. This won’t be a blowout by any means, but if it’s closer than the spread here we actually think the edge will go to Michigan State. The trend we are looking at here is Michigan St is 1-8 ATS after cover at least 5 of their last 7 games in the last 3 seasons.
This friend is a gift from the odds makers. There is no way that this game goes under here. Michigan State hasn’t had much time playing against the unique style Memphis brings to the game. This will be an up tempo game from start to finish and will fly by 136.5-points. Memphis is 12-5 OVER after a non-conference game this season.
Final Score - Memphis 75 - Michigan State 68
