MLB Picks: New York Mets at New York Yankees
Written June 12, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Mets enter this year’s Subway Series show down off a crushing 6-3 defeat to the Phillies in extra innings last night. The loss meant they dropped the series two games to one and fell further behind in the NL East. The search for that next guy to show up continues as David Wright and Carlos Beltran seem to be the only guys doing anything recently. Wright is hitting .362 on the season, while his power numbers are down which has a lot to do with the new ballpark, he has lifted this team on his back no matter what the average Mets fan wants to believe. This notion that David has not come up big in the clutch is nothing but false.. He is hitting .373 with runners on base this season and .361 with runners in scoring position. His batting average on the road happens to be .413 as well. If his home run total was higher he would be your favorite for NL MVP. Beltran has been no slouch himself hitting .341 with eight homers and 38 RBIs. With that said, who will be the next guy to step up with Reyes and Delgado hurt? On the pitching side of things, Livan Hernandez takes the mound tonight. So far he has been much better then expected with a 5-1 record along side an ERA of 3.88. Livan has went seven innings or more in three of his last four starts. The Mets are catching the Yankees at the right time as this game is set up for them to take advantage of. Today’s MLB odds show the Yankees as -220 moneyline favorites against the Mets and the total for the game set at 10.5 runs.
Oh boy, fresh off another spanking handed to them by The Nation, Manager Joe Girardi and the Yankees not find themselves two games back in the division and once again scrambling for answers. 0-8 is their record this year against Boston. With that comical record out of the way, they must get focused and prepare properly for the Subway Series this weekend. Besides Mark Teixeira who’s hitting .289 with 19 homers and 52 RBIs, their has not been another Yankee who has stepped up their game when it matters. No starter on the Yanks is hitting over .300. Damon has been solid with 13 home runs and 35 RBIs. Cano and Jeter seem to be in an extended slump while A-Roid has yet to find his swing. The starter for the Bronx Bombers tonight is Joba Chamberlin. His record on the season is 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA. Those are solid numbers from a pitcher who has done very well. But hold the phone here. On the road this season Joba is 3-0 with a 2.72 ERA. At home in the sandbox they call Yankee Stadium, he is 0-1 with a 5.48 ERA. The odds here are overwhelming for the Yanks and to be honest, I don’t know why. The Mets have a better 1-2 punch in their order then the Yanks by the numbers and Livan has been just as good if not better then Chamberlin. Friday’s baseball picks below.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Mets are 37-18 in their last 55 Friday games. The Yankees are 8-2 in their last 10 Friday games. Last season the Mets won the Subway Series 4-2. All three games between the two in Yankee Stadium went UNDER. Tonight, we will be looking to hit out biggest UNDERDOG SPECIAL of the season. The Mets are getting a monstrous bang for their buck here and I will gladly roll with it. The pitching match up is even, hitting wise I will look for Wright and Beltran each to have big games and the bull pen edge is in the Mets favor heavily. Also, Joba struggles at home and both teams will be hot with their bats, medium play on the over.
Jordan’s Picks: New York Mets +200 (UNDERDOG SPECIAL) & OVER 10.5 Runs (Small Play)
An interesting night last we had yesterday as we have extended our BEST BET winning streak to six in a row. We suffered two unfortunate losses as we missed the OVER in the Phillies/Mets game by half a run and we missed the Rangers Run Line as they won 1-0 (kicking myself the whole way). We don’t suffer a deficit on the night though as the BEST BET kept us a float. Good plays tonight. Lets stay hot.
Documented MLB Record:
70-47 OVERALL
29-14 BEST BETS
