Miami at Virginia Tech Football Spreads

Written September 24, 2009 by Hector Garza

Here comes the ACC matchup we’ve been waiting for, the only game of the week where two top 25 teams go head to head!  #9 Miami will be traveling to take on #11 Virginia Tech in what promises to be a pad popping extravaganza!  ESPN will be airing the game at 3:30 p.m. EDT, and the Canes are the favorite by 2 ½ points with the total at 47 ½ with the college football odds posted for the weekend.   If you are looking to do any football betting on this game or others, then take a look at the $500 FREE bonus offered to our readers by BetUS!

QB Jacoby Harris has been on a tear.  As a sophomore, he’s been precise by completing almost 70% of his passes for 656 yards and 5 td’s.  In two games thus far, he’s been named ACC Offensive Back of the Week twice.  He’s also done an excellent job spreading the ball to the open man, hitting 12 different receivers.  The U once again has a legitimate ground game and the offensive line has done its part, allowing one sack and boasting an avg. of 4 ypc.

The most impressive feat of the Canes defense was their ability to shut down Georgia Tech’s potent rushing attack.  Last year Tech was able to put up 472 yards running the ball, and Miami learned their lesson, as they gave up a stingy 95 yards rushing.  As usual the defense is built on speed, and they’ll no doubt add to the one interception they’ve had this year.  While there’s not one standout, there are 5 players with over 10 tackles a piece.  This defense has the ability to completely shut down Tech.

At 2-1, the Hokies are looking to break out on the offensive side of the ball.  Against their two ranked opponents they’ve been sluggish at best, averaging a paltry 75 ypg on the ground.  Last week they barely escaped against Nebraska, scoring on an 83 yard drive in the last 2 minutes.  The leader at QB, Tyrod Taylor, must improve on his 47.6% completion rate in order to make Tech a threat in the air.  If

Defensively the Hokies have given up an avg. of 365 yards a game, and the secondary is looking to improve by returning CB Stephan Virgil to the lineup.  The rush defense will need to improve as they’ve been gashed for an average of OVER 200 yards a game.  The line backing core has been the strength of the team, with each LB accounting for 20+ tackles.

Miami is one of the hottest teams in the country after racing out to a 2-0 record.  Both opponents were in the top 20, while the Hokies are 1-1 against ranked teams.  Virginia Tech has the advantage of playing at home, but their offense thus far has been a liability.  The Hurricanes leads the series 17-9, and will be hungry for their 3rd straight win against a ranked team.  If the Hokies special teams can’t come up with points, they may have trouble scoring.  Miami will continue rolling in the ACC, and will beat the Hokies by more than the spread.
