Michael Crabtree’s Holdout
Written August 6, 2009 by Jack Jones
Earlier this afternoon, the Examiner reported that the San Francisco 49ers and Michael Crabtree are at an impasse. No terms have been reached for the former Texas Tech wide receiver, so he has yet to join his team for training camp.
The problem seems to be that, although he was not the first receiver taken in the 2009 draft, most NFL experts saw him as the top prospect at his position. He wants to be paid like the best rookie receiver coming out of the draft, while the 49ers are hoping to get him at a bit of a discount considering he fell to them at #10 overall.

In this year’s NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders had their chance at Crabtree, passing on him for another receiver in Darius Heyward-Bey. Heyward-Bey has already signed a 5-year $23.5 million contract with the Raiders, which means Crabtree will be looking for at least that much in his contract.
The other problem with the situation is that there haven’t really been any top-tier receivers taken over the past two years, making the market for them hard to establish. In 2008, no wideouts were taken in the first round at all. As another comparison, the 3rd wide receiver taken in the draft, Jermey Maclin, has also already inked a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles worth $15.5 million, with $9.5 million guaranteed.
With the two contracts that have been established for wide receivers in this year’s draft, the 49ers and Crabtree might have to meet in the middle here. While Crabtree is the better prospect coming out of college, he simply fell farther than he expected. Unfortunately for him, the market for rookies in the NFL isn’t based on projected talent, it is based on draft position.

Michael Crabtree needs to get in practice and games and prove himself before hes even worth all the money hes bound to get. At least practice and do mini-camps then skip games, be smart. Time to adopt the NBA rookie pay scale system, NFL. Sitting out is only going to lose Crabtree money.
