Purdue at Michigan

The No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers (11-1) will open up Big Ten play on the road against the Michigan Wolverines (10-2) Tuesday afternoon at the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. The Boilermakers tied for the conference title last season at 14-4, while the Wolverines finished just 7-11 in conference play. The Boilermakers won the only meeting between these two teams last season 69-59 at Purdue. Our odds for this game have the Boilermakers favoredĀ  by 4-points over the Wolverines.

While the Wolverines record is impressive, they haven’t exactly played the toughest non-conference competition. Michigan’s toughest game came against Syracuse in the Legends Classic earlier this season. Michigan lost 53-50 for their first loss of the season, then followed it up with a disappointing performance against UTEP, losing 65-56 in the consolation game. The Wolverines have responded from those two losses with seven straight wins, and will look to win their eighth straight for the first time in eight years.

The Boilermakers only miscue game against Richmond in the Chicago Tournament earlier this season, but also haven’t exactly played the toughest schedule, as they have yet to face a ranked opponent in any game this season. The Boilermakers have won six straight since their loss to Richmond.

Both teams are very effective on the defensive end of the floor. Purdue is holding opponents to just 55.5 points a game, while the Wolverines aren’t far behind, giving up just 56.6 points per game.

The Wolverines are led by sophomore Darius Morris, who is averaging a team best 15.8 points and 7.5 assists per game. Freshman Tim Hardaway Jr is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game, and is coming off his best game of the season, where he scored 20 points against Bryant. Morris and Hardway combined to go 8-14 from 3-point range in the Wolverines last game, and Hardaway has shown the ability to really get hot from long distance.

As for the Boilermakers, they are led by seniors JuJuan Johnson and E’twaun Moore. Johnson barely leads Moore in scoring, as he averages 19.8 points per game, while Moore averages 19.4. Both are also the teams top two rebounders, as Johnson comes in averaging 7.9 and Moore 5.8. Freshman D.J. Byrd is currently fourth on the team, averaging 6.2 points per game, but is coming off a 15 point performance against IPFW, where he hit 5-7 from three-point range.

Even though the Wolverines are a perfect 9-0 at home this season, I think your money has to be on Purdue to win this game. With both teams strong on the defensive end, I think Moore and Johnson are much more capable of taking over this game. Michigan definitely has a chance, but will need both Morris and Hardaway to be on for them to win this game.
