Michigan State 2009 Football Predictions
Written June 16, 2009 by InfoPlays
MSU took a big step forward last year in Mark Dantonio’s second season. The Spartans won with a heavy dose of Javon Ringer, and timely plays by Hoyer and an opportunistic defense. But they didn’t pick up many big wins, losing to the four best teams on their schedule. There’s an influx of young talent coming in. The challenge will be to stay consistent and win a few games they aren’t supposed to win to remain ahead of the “others” in the Big Ten. The college football odds have the Michigan State Spartans listed at +10000 to win the 2010 NCAA National Championship.
Offense: Running back Javon Ringer and quarterback Brian Hoyer led the way last year in Michigan State’s Capital One Bowl appearance, which was the program’s first January 1st bowl game since 2000. Both are gone, leaving Sparty with two big positions to fill. Sophomores Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol were neck-and-neck in the spring and they’ll be starting off the fall sharing snaps under center. Hoyer was more of a pocket passer, while Cousins and Nichol are each athletic enough to implement option packages into the Michigan State Spartans the playbook.
Sophomores Ashton Leggett and Andre Anderson, along with true freshmen Edwin Baker and Larry Caper, are among six running backs competing to replace Ringer, who rushed for 1,637 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. Baker and Caper are the two most talented backs on the team and the leading candidates to earn the starting job. Whoever wins the job will have to run behind a new right side on the offensive line, featuring tackle J’Michael Deane and guard Jared McGaha. Experience in the receiving corps falls with Blair White, B.J. Cunningham and big-play man Mark Dell as each all caught at least 36 balls last season. Tight end Charlie Gantt has the talent to become an all-conference selection as well.

Defense: The strength of the team this year will be the eight returning starters on defense, including every linebacker. Middle Linebacker Greg Jones led the team in tackles in each of the past two years. He destroys the run and rarely gets blocked. Seven of eight defensive backs that contributed regularly last season will be back.
Cornerbacks Chris L. Rucker and Ross Weaver have struggled with injuries, but Rocker is primed for a breakout season if he can stay healthy. Their lone loss was Otis Wiley, but backup Trenton Robinson had a great spring and should man the free safety position. Defensive end Trevor Anderson had eight sacks last year, and Oren Wilson is a run-plugger inside. Redshirt freshman Tyler Hoover is a guy to watch for at the other end.
