Michigan State at Purdue College Football Odds

Written November 11, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The Purdue Boilermakers are coming off a great win at Ann Arbor, but they come home to face a very solid team in the Michigan State Spartans. The Boilermakers and the Spartans have both shown flashes of being very good teams so far this year, but neither one of them has been very consistent. Making football picks on either of these teams has been a very difficult task. This one looks like it should a very competitive Big Ten match up. If you’d like to bet on football, sign up at Bookmaker and receive a nice 20% bonus on your initial deposit.

The Boilermakers of Purdue have beaten both Michigan and Ohio State this season, but they have also lost at home to Northern Illinois and been beaten 37-0 at Wisconsin. Danny Hope’s team has quite a bit of talent, but turnovers have haunted them much of the season. For the most part the Purdue offense has been able to move the football consistently. Joey Elliot has already thrown for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season. The only issue with Elliot is that he has also thrown 13 interceptions this year. Elliot has the tools to be a very solid quarterback, but he needs to improve his decision making, which he has started to do of late. The running game of Purdue has been great at times and non existent at others, but sophomore Ralph Bolden is definitely a talented runner. The Boilers have two very good receivers in Keith Smith and Aaron Valentin. The defense of Purdue has been solid against the pass, but has given up 173 yards per game on the ground.

The Spartans of Michigan State lost at home to Central Michigan in their second game of the year, but they have bounced back to 5-5 and are in bowl contention. Kirk Cousins has done a very good job in his first year as the starting quarterback at Michigan State. Cousins has an impressive completion percentage of 63.7% and a 14/5 touchdown to interception ratio. Michigan State has a solid arsenal of tailbacks, led by Larry Capers and Edwin Baker. The offense as a whole has produced well, averaging 30 points per game this season. The defensive side of the ball has been a mystery, some games they are great and some games they are terrible. Against Northwestern, Illinois, and Iowa they allowed 15 points or less in three straight games, but then turned around and allowed 42 points to an injury depleted Minnesota team. Mark Dantonio will definitely want this defense to step up and help the team get to the next level.

The college football betting lines show Michigan State as a 3 point road favorite in this game. The college football picks on this spread are likely to be pretty split because of the unknowns surrounding these teams.  The posted total is set at 53 points. Interestingly, the over is 39-15-1 in Michigan State’s last 55 road games, but the under is 35-14-2 in Purdue’s last 51 home games.

This is an important game for both of these teams and I would expect to see the best both of these teams offer on Saturday afternoon. The offenses should be able to move the football well for both teams, but which team will punch it in for touchdowns and not turn the ball over and settle for field goals? That is most likely where this game will be won or lost.
