Michigan State vs. New Mexico State Line

Michigan State slipped down to a #5 seed after a tough finish to the season, and they’ll now take on #12 seed New Mexico State in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. These teams will meet in the Midwest Region, which looks like the toughest of the four regions on paper. The lines give us Michigan State -13 over New Mexico State.
The Michigan State Spartans have made 5 Final Four appearances in the last 11 years, and if they are to get there again they are going to need just about everyone to start playing better. The Spartans lost in their first game of the Big Ten Tournament in overtime to Minnesota, and really faltered down the stretch of the regular season. Michigan State did finish 24-8 and won a share of the Big Ten regular season title with Ohio State. But their best defender and shooter, Chris Allen, got suspended for one game and missed the Big Ten Tournament. Durell Summers was benched for the final 14 minutes of that loss to the Gophers, the second time he’s been benched by Tom Izzo in the last month. Kalin Lucas is not playing like he did in the tournament last season, and he’s their leader. Delvin Roe is battling a right knee injury that will require surgery once the season is over. Derrick Nix has been complaining to the media about a lack of playing time. But if there’s any coach in the country that can get his team to turn all these negatives into positives, it’s certainly Tom Izzo. You can never count this team out when he’s running the show.
After a 3-6 start to their season, the New Mexico State Aggies wound up in the NCAA Tournament. After battles early in the season with academic issues, both Wendell McKines and Troy Gillenwater each became academically eligible in the second half and New Mexico State has been dominant ever since. The Aggies finished 22-11 overall and 11-5 in the WAC, earning second place behind Utah State during the regular season. They won 9 of their final 12 games overall, and beat host Nevada in the final seconds of the semifinals, followed up by a 69-63 win over Utah State in the championship game. This is a very fun team to watch as they push the tempo, featuring 5 players that score in double figures. They are Jahmar Young (20.5), Jonathan Gibson (17.5), Gillenwater (14.4), McKines (10.8) and Hamidu Rahman (10.4). This is a very interesting battle between the Aggies’ offense and the Spartans’ sturdy defense.
Got something to say?
