Michigan State at Wisconsin College Football Odds

Written September 24, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

michigan-state-wisconsin-odds-092409The Michigan State Spartans will travel to Camp Randall Stadium to take on the Wisconsin Badgers this Saturday afternoon. Michigan State comes off a heartbreaking loss at South Bend against Notre Dame, a game many believe the Spartans should have won. Wisconsin is 3-0 on the season, but it needed overtime to beat Fresno State at home and hasn’t faced any real tough competition up to this point. The showdown should be a compelling game between two teams that are unknowns in the Big Ten conference battle this year. Both Michigan State and Wisconsin could make some noise and be a force to be reckoned with or they could slide toward the lower half of the standings.  If you are looking for somewhere to bet college football this season, check out BetUS and get a $500 match bonus with a new account and deposit of $500 or more.

Michigan State has last two straight and it badly needs a win in this game. The Spartans were shocked at home against Central Michigan and then appeared to have Notre Dame beaten only to lose 33-30. Michigan State has had to replace some pretty solid offensive talent that was lost in the offseason. Quarterback Brian Hoyer graduated and running back Javon Ringer also graduated leaving them looking for a top running back. Kirk Cousins has slid over into the quarterback position and has done a pretty solid job, but the Spartans have yet to find much success running the football this season. The team hasn’t been very balanced offensively and they also have shown a lack of being able to make the big stop defensively when it is really needed.

After being a top contender for the Big Ten title for several years Wisconsin had an unexpectedly poor season last year. The Badgers lost a lot of close football games and never really found an identity as a team. The Badgers are trying to get back to what they do best this season, and that is run the football and be a power football team. Wisconsin’s John Clay is a very strong running back that can cause lots of headaches for defenses. Ultimately Wisconsin will have to establish some sort of passing attack in order to beat the best teams, but at this point Scott Tolzien and the Badgers inexperienced receivers haven’t shown too much. The defense has not been nearly as physical in the past year as it used to be and they don’t seem to be able to wear down offensive lines or get the penetration necessary to stop plays before they get started.

The college football odds show Wisconsin -3 at home against Michigan State. The over/under for this game is set at 54 points at most sports books. Interestingly, the over is 7-3 in the last 10 home games for Wisconsin and the over is 12-4 in Michigan State’s last 16 conference games. The over might be a solid play in this game.

Look for the Badgers to come out and try to establish the run and dominate the line of scrimmage while they are on offense. Michigan State will try to make Wisconsin into a passing team and put them behind the chains. I expect this game to be very hotly contested and it could very well come down to the last possession. The over is probably the best play here as both offenses will likely flex their muscles.

This is a betting site, and you make a clueless comment about Scott Tolzien and the UW receivers not showing much??? That is the most misleading comment about the Badgers I have seen online.

Tolzien, as all the sports pundits have been remarking, is the best QB Wisconsin has had in years. After 3 games he is #2 in the Big Ten in both passing and pass efficiency.
He has completed nearly 70% of his passes and Wisconsin, thus far, has had far more of a passing attack than a running attack. You would know this if you watched the games or read about them afterwards.

They have 1 of the best tight ends in the country, Garret Graham, catching a lot of passes, not to mention some breakout wide receiver stars, especially Nick Toon.

As if that weren’t enough, Wisconsin’s #2 passer is a run threat and in just 4 carries last week, amassed 92 yards.

If you are gonna comment about Tolzien, shouldn’t you look at some box scores and stats first? Just for the sake of not misleading bettors.

The Badgers issues are with defense and ruinning consistency. The passing game is the reason they are 3-0.

One last word on this…anybody who does a Google news search on Tolzien will see that I am not being a ‘homer’ in my comments about him.

Today alone, ESPN commentator Chris Spielman made the following comment:
“I like their team this year,” Spielman said, referring to the Badgers. “I know a lot of people are kind of lukewarm on them, but when you have a quarterback who is playing like that kid (Scott Tolzien), and as accurate as he has been, no one better take them lightly. They can line up and play with anybody”

The problem with the Badgers was correctly identified this way:
“To me, they are a well-balanced team,” Spielman said. “If they can get the running game going a little bit, and they can hang on to the football, they can be dangerous.”

    scootmandu,

Thanks for the comment. Here’s my problem with this. Take a look at the three defenses that Wisconsin has played against. None of the three are good at all. Tolzien threw 2 interceptions against NIU, and hasn’t proven he can be a bigtime leader yet. He may well end up being a very good quarterback, but he still has a long way to go before he proves that.
