Michigan State vs. Penn State Football Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 18, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The Big 10 is nearing its finish and this week the big game is the No.15 ranked Michigan State Spartans taking on the No.7 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. Both teams sit at 6-1 in conference play, but the Nittany Lions are the only team that holds its future in its own hands, as the Spartans would need a Ohio State loss to Michigan to sneak into the Rose Bowl. Last week the Nittany Lions rolled over Indiana at home 34-7, and the Spartans did the same against Purdue winning 21-7. Now if you are looking to do some NCAA betting on this game, the oddsmakers are thinking it’s the Nittany Lions headed to the Rose Bowl, as Penn State is 14.5 point favorites at home over the Spartans at Sportsbook.com

Now even though the chances of the Spartans getting into the Rose Bowl even if they win is very slim, they have to go into this game with the attitude that if they win they are in, as they will need every ounce of focus and energy to pull off the big upset this weekend. In the Spartans most recent win of the Boilermakers it was all star running back Javon Ringer, as he ran it 32 times for 121 yards and 2 scores. Now its a good thing Ringer had it going in this one, as quarterback Brian Hoyer had his struggles throwing the football for just 154 yards and 2 interceptions. Now its not that Ringer won’t be able to run the football in this one, but Hoyer has to have a better day throwing the football if the Spartans are going to win on the road this week.

Now Ringer wasn’t the only reason the Spartans came away with a win last week, as the defense came to play in this one, as they allowed the Boilermakers just 191 total yards, and made Purdue one dimensional, as they shut down the passing game to just 83 yards on 13/30 passing with an interception.Johnny Adams made sure the Boilermakers paid for the interception, as he ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown. The Spartans defense has its hands full this week against a Nittany Lions attack that can beat you with multiple weapons. We are thinking the Spartans stick around close but fade towards the end, it will just be a matter of keeping this one within the spread. Bet Michigan State +14.5 at Sportsbook.com

Penn State did a good job of rebounding off their heartbreaking loss to the Hawkeyes two weeks ago, but there is no question that loss will likely haunt this team for some time to come. With a Rose Bowl spot in the makings this team just has to focus on the future, and get the job down against the Spartans this week. Against Indiana last week the Nittany Lions came out a little sluggish, as they had just a 10-7 lead going into half, but the offense poured it on with 17 third quarter points. Daryll Clark led the way throwing the football for 240 yards and 2 scores, while Evan Royster and Derrick Williams combined for 124 yards and 2 scores on the ground. Look for the Lions to try and pound the football this week, as they will try and control the clock and keep the ball out of Ringer’s hands.

The Nittany Lions defense allowed the Hoosiers to get the running game going early, as Marcus Thigpen had a 57 yard touchdown run, but other than that run Indiana had just 66 yards on the ground. The Hoosiers passing game was pretty much non existent, as they had just 57 yards with an interception. Now Indiana offense isn’t much to speak of, but you have to think this unit is going to come out fired up and make life as hard as they can on Ringer, cause if you stop Ringer you pretty much stop the Spartans offense. If Ringer is able to have a big game, than expect this one to be much closer than the oddsmakers are predicting. Bet Penn State -14.5 at Sportsbook.com
