Phil Mickelson Odds to Win the Masters
Written April 6, 2009 by Jason Lowry
It was here at the Masters where Phil Mickelson finally broke through and won a major back in 2004, after suffering for over a decade of failing to come up with the big win in the big event. Since that win in 2004, Mickelson has added two more major wins to his totals, including another win here at the Masters in 2006. Mickelson was unable to win with Tiger out of the picture last year at the British Open and the PGA Championship, and how special would it be to see a Tiger vs. Phil showdown on Sunday afternoon.
There is no question that Mickelson plays the Masters the best out of the 4 major events, as Mickelson has two wins here and 11 total top ten finishes, including a tie for 5th here a year ago. Mickelson seems to thrive here at Augusta and for a streaky player, his consistency here makes him a dangerous threat to win this event. Were talking about a guy who has only missed the cut once at Augusta, and has only one finish outside of the top 12 since 1995, something Mickelson doesn’t even come close to doing any other major. In fact Phil has just 5 more top 10 finishes in the other 3 majors combined. Bet Masters at Sportsbook.com.
It has been an up and down year for Mickelson here in 2009, as he has failed to make the cut twice this season, including last week at the Shell Houston Open, and he has two finishes outside of the top 40, but all that bad play can turn around in a hurry, as Mickelson showed during his play in February and March where he won twice in 3 starts. Mickelson’s wins came at the Northern Trust Open and the WGC-CA Championship. Basically it really doesn’t matter what Phil has done so far this season when it comes to performing well at the Masters, as his past success here indicates he will be ready to go come the time he steps on the No.1 tee this Thursday. The thing that makes Phil so dangerous is he is one of the best golfers in the world at getting himself out of trouble, as his short game is right there with Tiger Woods when it comes to saving pars and making very difficult shots around the green look easy. Mickelson will need that short game to be in full force this weekend if he wants to make another run at a green jacket. One other thing to keep an eye on is Mickelson’s driving, as it has been really good a times this season, and keeping it in the fairway is huge at Augusta. Phil and Tiger have never been in the position to be paired in the final round on Sunday, and it would come to no surprise if this were the year we finally get to see it happen.
